Questions about starting a build
Looking to begin building my 98 GS300. Want to start with the transmission before building the motor.
Would like to either put 5speed manual or a slapstick/sports shifter in it. I have knee issues so was curious if I could do a non-manual upgrade.
My question is what kind of transmission should I be looking for? Not looking to for a crazy motor build. Close to 400hp, maybe a turbo have not decide yet..
Any input would be welcome!
Thank you.

A couple of things:
The stock a650 can be built to easily handle more than your target power. Check out PowerDynamix out of Dallas area. This is the most economical and lowest hassle option IMO. You keep the stock ECU.
If you're looking to avoid the third pedal and don't want to upgrade your stock 5 speed auto, it is a bit more complicated. There are companies that make transmission controllers and there are also companies that make 2JZ adapters for transmissions - such as an auto ZF 8hp70 - such as is used in lots of BMWs and Mopars. There are also adapters for some BMW DCTs. Either of these options will be far more expensive and challenging than having the stock transmission upgraded, and much overkill for the power you're looking to make.

Thank you, for your input! I have found no real information on building the stock trans, been told that it is designed to only hold about 300hp. I will look into the Powerdynamix! I don't mind the issue of adding a 3rd pedal, I just don't like the problems of putting it in. Do you know of what other vehicles, have a 5spd trans that I could find to build a trans out of

Price of all things has gone through the roof in the past year thanks in part to the covid *****. Much discontinued and on back order. Be sure to speak to the guys at Serial-nine, or DriftMotion, or SupraStore before choosing a route to know what is actually available and affordable at this time. Those three are some top resources for everything 2jz.
