Default GS300 Transmission Slipping

I took the old girl up to Mount Charleston this weekend, it is about 50 minutes from my place in Las Vegas. It was really hot here, about 112 during the drive.

Car performed perfect until we really started to make the climb uphill. I was in 2nd gear and the RPMs dropped from 2500 to 500 instantly. I was able to pull over to the shoulder, let her cool down, then parked and went for hike.

After about an hour or so, I came back and was able to drive home with no issues. Wondering if this is just a case of the tranny overheating, what is my next move. I have done nothing to the tranny since owning the car. I am planning to swap in a 2JZ-GTE VVTi, after the heat goes away!

Thinking about draining my tranny fluid, thinking about adding a tranny cooler. Thoughts?

I would check the fluid and confirm color and condition. If the fluid is black or very dark I would do a complete drain and refill

Thanks! I think I am going to do a complete drain and refill, however I have read on here that can be a bad thing if done the wrong way.
