Hi Everyone,

So my current alternator in my 2000 GS300 has basically died. I have 3 XSD3400 Batteries ( Yes I know, the XSD3100 Batteries would have been better for music, I didn't know at the time when I bought them, so stuck with them for now), 2 DC Audio Level 5's (3000RMS, 6000Watts max), 2 3.5K DC audio amps. Big 3 has been done and I only use 0 guage wiring. I figured that my alt would die as my current setup pulls a *****load of power and the stock alt can't put out enough amps for everything.

I currently have a 240A alt coming from Mechman, when I spoke to the rep, he told me the 320 would not charge below 2000RPM, so I should go with the 240 which I took his advice on. After doing the math, it seems that the 240A will not provide enough amps for the system itself and probably kill that alternator as well. Does anyone here run a dual alternator setup? I am thinking about rebuilding the dead stock alt to 140A ( the max that the local shop will build it to) and running it with the 240A alt. Anyone here ever done that? If so, any places to suggest to get the brackets built and what size belt was used?

Slightly off topic but can I see a pic of your sub setup? That's some nice equipment and I'm assuming you have it in at least a 5 cubic foot box.

Hmm, im also interested. I have an extra alternator that was built to higher amps and i would like to run it so my battery lasts longer lol

Just saw the updates to my post. I'll take a pic tomorrow morning. I bought a bandpass box off a local guy around my area, didn't take measurements, but will in the morning when I'm putting in the 240A alt. Its a pretty big box though, takes up the whole drunk. It was supposed to slide in the area in the back of the trunk and stay there, but something is getting it caught and it doesn't go in so we left it as it is, cuz its way to heavy (Box alone was like 60 pounds).

Doesn't seem like anyone has done a dual alt setup for our cars does it? LOL

Its the seatbelt box cover that is preventing you from sliding it back. Remove the cover

Ah but I did. Also took out the carpet, cuz I thought that was giving me problems as well. Its looks like it has clearance but something is blocking it.

Sorry if you stated this before but did you remove the stock subwoofer? I could be getting in the way if you haven't already...

If increasing the rpm would solve the problem then how about going with a smaller pulley on the alternator and a shorter belt.

Too much work, although it would work. Then again a duel alternator setup is alot of work also.

OP are you going to comps? or is it for city driving? I dont think a 240 will toast on you. I had 2 15 inch fosgate t2s and a 3000 rms amp in my old gs400, stock alternator\battery and i added a big three with a couple caps. my lights dimmed so bad but my original alternator took that abuse for almost 2 years then i sold it. I would think with that many batteries and an upgraded alternator you should be fine

oh yea stock sub has been taken out way before. Just cant seem to find why the box can squeeze into the back. I'm thinking of cutting the metal to give it a little more clearance.

City driving, not any comps yet. Maybe in the future.. haha. After installing the 240A with the batteries and Big 3 done with zero guage only running, I have a solid 14.1 - 14.5 with the music off or on very low. When I raise it for a song, it goes down to about 13.1 so its solid enough for me for now. I would have loved to use the other alternator though. Maybe I'll get something fabricated up and see what I can do!

You might also price in a set of hearing aids for a future purchase approx. $5000 . Just joking, sounds like a super sound system lol.
