starting issue, crank, stutter then died
I have a 1999 GS300. It cranks, fuel pump running, but never catch..
If I kept repeating it, eventually, it will stutter. It acted like the engine is flooded.
If will stutter and if I give it gas, it'll die... eventually, it will smooth out and runs fine.
Leave it over night, does it again.
Do I have a leaky injector(s)?

I changed the igniter already. It worked for two weeks. I swapped the MAF sensor too. I even changed the ECU with a another key fob.
I sent the old one to check. They said it's fine. I haven't got that one back yet.
I think I have to dig into it and check the spark plugs to see which one has carbon build up. I hope that will tell me which injector is leaking gas.
Any other suggestion?

for me, I had did a full tune up, changed the timing belts and basically had the engine rebuilt.
Then the issue started.
I changed the igniter and the issue has happened 1 time since and its been about 2 months now.
So for me the igniter fixed the problem.
I had a 1300 error code when I put the diagnostic computer on my car.

black01gs,
I appreciate you brainstorming the problem with me... I'm stumped. Suppose to do a smog check by the end of this month too.
I guess I'll pay the reg. first.

I had a very similar problem doing the same things, however if I kept giving it gas it would stay alive though not very well. Turned out my fuel pump was halfway dead. At idle I believe you should be around 40psi and mine was running but only pushing through at about 15-25psi. Replaced the pump and problem solved, but it took awhile to figure that out.

I replaced the fuel pump less than a yr ago. I can change it out again. I only change the actual pump...
This time, I have half a tank of gas. Which is rare... most of the time, the fuel pump died when the tank is full... haha.

I would do a fuel pressure check. Could be a bad fuel pressure regulator, or if at a half tank is when it starts to siphon from the other side of the tank. Just a couple things I experienced in my hunt for a very similar issue. I replaced mine with an OEM pump and it has been fine since.

I eventually got it running smooth... I noticed the electric fan would come on and goes off 3sec later then on again another 3 sec... eventually it will come on and stay on for 5 sec then goes off.
My mechanic neighbor think I should replace the ECT temp sensor. He said if the ECU has the wrong temp info it won't start right. That may explain the stutter.
He also said to check the spark plugs to see if it's wet when it fail to start initially.
I'll replace the ECT first and report back.

I think I found the culprit...My valve covers leaked and dump oil into the center which runs into the plugs...
This explain why the engine stutters for a while.... it was burning all the motor oil first before it runs right.
No code for this sorta thing...
I got a lot of work ahead of me... replacing the valve cover gaskets, plugs, etc....
Fun stuff.
I hope this will be helpful for some people down the line....

Glad you found it man! I did mine awhile ago and if it’s due I recommend doing a full timing belt and seals job while you have the valve covers off. I found a dead mouse in one of my valleys when cleaning them out.
