Default Thoughts or real world experiences with backup cameras?

I have a Kenwood navi in my 2000 GS300 (thanks to the PO ). I was considering a license mount unit to avoid having to drill into my car. Seems you can get a decent one on Amazon for about $25. But I would also like to keep it clean and classy looking. Does anyone have any suggestions or maybe cameras they have installed?

I'm not normally on the GS forum, only the ES but I've always thought of putting a backup camera underneath the bumper. Like near the spare tire well. I would hate to have a giant camera sticking out on the back of my car.

Maybe that wouldn't give you enough field of view. Who knows, just an idea.

Under the rear would be dirty. I got a license mounted one. Not bad. I like it

I bought one that I'm going to mount on the chrome trim the sit above the headlight. No sure where the other guy has been looking for cameras, but I haven't seen any big enough where you'd notice it unless you were looking for it. Mine fits in the palm of my hand.

I mounted my backup camera in the trunk keyhole and looks pretty good.

I work as a valet, and the top of the plate will probably be the best place without drilling. That's the only way to have your rear bumper as reference so that you can get super close to the vehicle behind you without tapping it. Makes parallel parking a breeze.

What he said ^. I work as a valet too and I've found that the best ones show you the edge of the rear bumper so you can get really close to whatever is behind you. I ended up with the tao tronics license frame camera for like 45 bucks off of Amazon. Works well. I did have to drill a hole in the back of the license plate to run the wires though. Good luck

If you've got the gumps.....my lexus is almost 20 years old. I drilled out a hole right at the license plate hole. Paint and a rubber grommet keep things from rusting... The camera is behind the plate and the bolt hold has been drilled out bigger to let the camera see thru

The best bang for your buck, I'd say get a nice one that bolts in on your license plate.. I have had 2 on different vehicles and one on the top of my rear doors on a sprinter van..

This is from eBay. All metal housing. Looks close to how an oem would be. No room inside license plate trim to flush mount a camera.

As you can see, I can see my bumper, which is a huge help when trying to get close to a wall or car when reversing.

That definitely looks clean. How much was it? Do you still have the link or remember which user you bought it from?

Dungnut's one looks perfect. Pretty much as close as you can to OEM-like.

Looks like this maybe?:

You can see by my picures it is mounted just to the right of the trunk keyhole. This is due to the mounting bolt on the camera would interfere with the lock if it was mounted center. I like this camera since I am able to route the wires through the bolt hole, eliminating extra holes.
