Hi guys,

We all know that the 98-05 GS430/400 (same for 300) are interference engines and therefore if the timing belt snaps, the piston and valves can smack into each other and lead to internal engine damage. As a result, Lexus recommends replacement of the timing belt every 90K miles.

I'm curious if anyone here has ever had a timing belt actually snap? I hear that the OEM belts are Kevlar coated and extremely strong. As a result, I have never actually heard of one snapping on these cars. Most people who do replace them usually report that their original timing belt was in great shape with no sign of wear. I've even heard of guys going well over 200K miles with their original timing belts.

Does anyone have pics of their belt (and if so, at what mileage did you remove it)?

What fails is the water pump or tensioner. When they seize the belt breaks and the valves go bye bye

I replaced mine at 60k because the car was 10+ years old. Old belt looked fantastic

I replaced mine about 3k miles ago. The last belt maybe had 60k or 180k( last owner did not have proof of t/b replacement, just a sticker staying it was changed) looked fine but I changed it just to be safe. Job takes an afternoon and kits are about $350 including waterpump on rock auto.

I have a good friend of mine with a 99 GS4 - he bought it from a shady car curbing dude and I TOLD him to change the timing belt ASAP - well fast forward 6 mod and his car had been in and out of my shop for many little things - he forgot the timing belt.

So, one day at 180K kms, he decided to have us do the belt - you would NOT believe me but my partner went to pick up the car and on the WAY to the shop the belt BROKE.

26 bent valves later he got a new engine...

I've never heard of these belts snapping. Mitsuboshi in particular. Very sturdy.

Mine is due a timing belt soon. Is there a DIY for this? I have a GS430 about to hit 90k, and I'd like to change it myself if there's a chance.

I just changed my timing belt in my 1999 GS300 with 155K. Last changed at 35K. Why so early (in 2001), I don't know. Recall? Warranty work? It looked brand new still. No fray or wear at all. I will take a pic and post it.

I did wait to long on my Toyota Camry (non-interference) and it snapped on me at 125K. AAA tow and a new belt put on and it was like new.
