Limited Slip Differential Options for 2001 GS430
Hi guys,
I just wanted to explore options available for us 2nd Gen guys for alternatives to the factory open rear? I would like to eliminate this one-wheel-peel that these cars have stock.
Looking for something reliable and cost effective.
Also, what do type of pricing am I looking at?
Thank you,
Luke

I had an OS-Giken LSD installed at Vex Performance, and it is one of the best modifications I have ever done to any vehicle. I will be putting one in everything I own moving forward. Talk to Jimmy and he will get you an awesome price. I would not waste my time with the cheaper torsen-type diffs.
Be warned, this diff adds so much traction that you lose some fun factor, in terms of being able to do burnouts. The car will just grip and stay planted. I cannot say enough about it! REALLY makes a guy want to put a blower on the car though.

You can buy an aftermarket LSD but be warned, they can be noisy and harsh for street. Cost is usually $1600-$2000+. Then on top of that you need an expensive install that cannot just be done by anyone.
If you buy a complete diff unit (pumpkin) the install is very quick and easy, I've seen people do it in their driveway.
I have 2 GS4's and in the first one I bought the complete TRD LSD unit ( in about 2006) at a "deal" brand new and it was over $2k
My second one I just finished putting the MKIV supra LSD in and I managed to again find a "deal" on a used one at $800 shipped.
Here are my observations:
The TRD unit is a little bit more aggressive - it locks up a little "harsher" which will give you the occasional shudder.
The Supra MKIV unit is more seamless, but there are times when it will not lock up - not often but it will happen (keep in mind even the TRD unit will do this, just not as much)
The Used supra diff I bought also has a very slight noise - just the risk you run buying used.
If you want the Supra diff, you NEED to make sure of 2 things:
1) HAS to be a automatic TURBO
2) Only certain years of MKIV TT auto cars have the LSD, you can not be sure unless you open the case.
It is only a direct swap if you have a GS400, the GS300 will require the pinion flange to be swapped.
Also to note, there are NO OTHER compatible LSD units available in any other USDM Lexus or Toyota vehicles - There was never and option for LSD in any GS or SC models here.
I have seen prices for used supra diffs from $500-$1200 (the average is about $800)
Now here's the sad, sad part of my story:
Years ago, before I knew about the supra diff fitting our cars - I THREW AWAY a supra TT auto diff!!! I had a friend who did a auto to manual conversion with the diff too and he left the diff and tranny at my shop - I just keep telling myself it was probably not and LSD...

Thank you for the reply guys.
Can anyone elaborate on the "TRD" diff? Is this Toyota or is this aftermarket? Also:
1.) Is this the right part number for a 2001 GS430? TR 41301-JS401
2.) Are these units rebuildable?

With the supra TT diff gearing, your rpms will be higher at cruising speeds which does not help our already poor mpg. If that doesn't bother you then the supra tt diff is the quickest and easiest way to get lsd. Although member bpc23 found a solution to fix the high revving problem in the supra tt diff. The ring gear is interchangeable between our gs and supra diffs. You just need to take both diffs apart and swap the ring gears with the carrier.

That would be the route I would take to get lsd but keep my rpms lower on the highways

At the moment Elmhurst Toyota have auto TRD LSD in stock. I have one on my SC. To be honest I only feel it working when 1. I am doing a burn out 2. When a corner above safe speed I can feel it tuck the front of the car in. Doesn't make any noise. My mechanic had me do a few figure 8 in the parking lot to loosing it up after install.
