I had my CEL come on 2x in the last 600 miles both times it was very cold, I had just started the car 1st time that day, it ran bad and I was using 87 octane gas. The car ran fine after warming up but is it a possibility that I'm getting the CEL because of the fuel?

Scan for the code, then you will know. I don't think regular gas would cause the cel. The car computer will adjust the timing for lower grade gas. It is not recommend however to put regular gas in a performance car. The car was design with high octane for performance purpose. Putting lower grade gas does not save you any money. Your car will suffer from lower mpg, so the cost will balance itself out. My suggest to you is DONT USE LOWER GRADE GAS THAN THE CAR MANUFACTURE IS RECOMMENDED. This suggest is for any car.

Check for exhaust leaks if you are getting P0420.

bad fuel can cause your cel to come on. also can exhaust leaks, bad oxygen sensors or bad converters. drive it with proper fuel, if the fault comes back, troubleshoot.

I agree that the car is supposed to adjust the timing when using lower octane gas. However, I used to fill with regular gas and would get multiple CELs. After switching to premium, it would go away for longer periods of time, to the point where I now only get it for 2 days out of the year at most. I haven't made any changes other than switching to premium gas so I'm going to assume that using lower octane gas was the cause. Note that the CEL problem didn't disappear right away, but perhaps I should have reset the ecu (i.e. unplug the battery for a while).

a 420 code is 90% of the time an exhaust leak. Do you hear any farting type of sounds when driving? Make sure you get your car checked out for exhaust leaks before assuming it was the gas. STILL, you should NEVER put less then 91 octane gas in this car. It was designed that way for a reason.
