Default Quick key question - plastic cracked on remote key

What options do I have? The plastic cracked where it screws near the blade comes out.

Can I use the electronics in the current one and just get a new outer case? Totally new key and remote combo? It's a 2002 if year matters.

Yes, you can get just a key shell, have it cut and swap the electronics over. There are several options. You can get a cheap key shell off ebay and find a locksmith with the ability to cut it (or have your local dealer cut it). You can get a key shell from your dealer and they usually cut it for free if you buy it from them. I believe they usually run about $50. The dealer key shell seems to be a higher quality (thicker plastic) than aftermarket ones I've seen.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So the shell comes with the blade attached as a single unit then? No options are available that don't require a key cut but instead use the existing blade?

You will need to get the key code that is specifically assigned to your VIN from the dealer so the locksmith can cut the correct key (based on my experience). I ordered the key already cut, and then removed the key fob from the broken case into the new key shell. This is who I used and I had a great experience, my local locksmith was trying to overcharge me because it was a “high end” vehicle. Be sure and use the search function, it's an awesome tool. These cars are old and everything has already been discussed more than a few times. Good luck.

$10 bucks is pretty cheap, every place in town as well as most people on CL have posted that laser cutting is $40+

I too have the flip keys, found a guy in Frisco who sells the the key, cut and shipped for $30 bucks.

Oh and no key code from dealer is needed, a locksmith can just look at the key and see the code. I sent a picture to the guy who cut mine and he was able to cut the key from just the picture.

Do it the right way and stop in your dealer its $75 LIFETIME warranty u can break a 1000 of em it's still free, takes 10 minutes and it's a hell of a lot more durable than the ebay plastic junk trust me, I ran through 3 of those in one year their trash, it's been a year and I have had zero problems with my dealer key...

Take your DENSO blank you buy, off Amazon or eBay, to your dealer and they will cut a new key. My dealer charges $12.50.

With the key code you can order new case and key already cut on ebay. By law dealer has to give you the key code for free if you show proof of ownership like your title.

Careful with the flip keys. Some get in the way of the windshield wiper toggle.
