Default Strange audio problem, is it unit failing?

More often than none, when I start my car, the volume is very low or non existence. The moment I gently adjust the volume (decrease or increase ever so lightly), the volume jumps up to the max in less than a second and blast music through the speaker. It scares my wife every time and she thinks i do it on purpose. I have a 2001 GS430 with ML and navigation. Is my unit slowly disintegrating?

Side note- sometimes the audio present on my ML screen would disappear as though someone has increase the EQ so much that it is off the display.

You describe the exact symptoms of a failing/failed mark levinson amplifier. Replace it, have it repaired, or go aftermarket. Be careful if you buy a used one, the newer ones from 03-05 have updated internals to prevent this problem.

thanks for the tip. What other lexus model will have an ML amp that is compatible with our cars and contains the new updated internals?

Bingo. The disappearing EQ settings is a dead giveaway.
