Trying to do a timing belt today and my thermostat housing into the block was stuck and I finally got it out but it broke off the o-ring section and part of the main housing stuck in the block. I think it is called the Water Bypass Housing.

Anyone know where I get a new housing? Not the part the hose connects to, the part the thermostat seals to and has the 2 bolts that holds it into the block.

Not cool to break!

I'd try the salvage yards for a part like that. Should be really cheap.

In the Midwest, not too many as you probably know. Hope you can come up with one, Sewell is always an option if you can't, I'm sure they could get it but wouldn't be the most cost effective option. I'd check rockauto too if you can't find used.

Got one from my friend who works at Lexus. $97 dealer cost and got it next day.

It IS a new design, functionally the same, but the design is different. Mine is just over SN 4700, so it is a very early GS400, made IIRC in Sept 1997. So I am not surprised the part got a redesign, the original one had a fair bit more machining to it, the new one has much less.

For giggles I will see what price Sewell can get on it and let you know. But by all means, when doing a timing belt swap, be careful on this part! My friend recommended I use brake caliper lube on the oring to make sure it doesn't happen again. He does all of them that way. I used Anti-Seize, so I hope it lasts till the next timing belt swap!

You should find a used one fairly easy if you post a WTB in the classifieds.

In future, tap with rubber mallet.

I did tap on it with limited face hammer,nothing helped. I worked on it for an hour and a half. I tried pb blaster, prying turning, pulling, tapping on with hammer and pulling, it was just not wanting to come loose, I ended just prying in the wrong place. It had a fair amount of buildup in the o-ring groove, so my guess is it had a nice ledge built up. Maybe if I kept at it I could have, but I didn't forsee the part breaking, so for those who try, be careful, don't pry!

I put anti seize on it when I put it in hopefully in 90k I will not have an issue again....

Sewell shows the same part for $78, but I would have to pay shipping and wait, I was able to get this one next day but I had to drive 200 miles to get it and get back home.

Didn't need a balancer puller, it came off with a gentle pull. Apparently this is really common. Love the tight exact tolerances!
