Hello I am Blisk26 I am looking to buy a 1997-2003 Lexus Gs 300 , However i have seen a few with 222k miles or 176 k miles on them . My question is how long do these engines last would it be a good commuter car for a busy college student , on a side note I know i could get a Camry or something but I want a Lexus so please don't respond like that . Serious buying tips and things to watch out for thank you . Im RJ by The way and just joined club Lexus . I previously just lost my 2001 Toyota Celica due to it power sliding after being bumped on the freeway so Im a little pissed at fwd cars at the moment , however matanince wise would it be better for me to just get another Celica . Any way advice would be awesome thank you.thank

You won't want to read this but, being a college student, my suggestion to you would be to grab the cheapest, most reliable car you can find that gives excellent mpg's. So, go for another Celica or Camry four cylinder. Don't waste your time and precious money on the expenses you will have on an old GS. be patient bro. I know you want a Lexus, but Lexus aint going anywhere. They'll always be around. Once you graduate and start your career/profession, you can rock any brand new Lexus you like, because you'll be able to afford it.

I'm a college student too, and I bought my lexus about 15 months ago. I'm able to have enough income where I can afford the maintenance on the car. I've put about $1200 into my car since buying it (tires, ball joints, abs sensors).

If you have enough income that you're able to do it, then go for it, but just figure out what your priorities are, and base your decision off of that.

Ok thank you , So i should probably get another Celica then thank you , I do have the income to but still i just have a grave fear of my car sliding on the freeway given my last accident .

Gas mileage will not be great but if you wamt the car and can afford it go for it.

This right here. $1200?? I could barely scrape five bucks together when I was in college. If I had $1200 in my hands at that age, it certainly wouldn't have been going to repair a used car. It would've been going to clothes, food and hanging out. But this is the amount of money you are going to spend on this car. Maybe even more. Don't know your financial situation but who has that kinda dough in college? Maybe times have changed??

I make good money in the summer, but only work part time while school is in session. Student loans also play a part too. Everybody's situation is different in college, but I'm graduating in a week. I felt comfortable with buying my car with a year of school left.

Plus, it wasn't so much repair as maintenance. The car needed new tires when I bought it, and then I drove 25k miles on the car in the first year, and needed another set of tires (because of staggered wheels). Besides that, I did a ball joint replacement and a speed sensor replacement.
