Default What makes these cars so reliable?

So i was just thinking, my first car when i was 16 was a 1998 gs400. And i have NO CLUE how i got 60k outa that thing, when i bought it from a 20 year old and the car had over 100k when i got it. I am not exaggerating when i say that the car was basically tracked everyday i had it. All i know is i put that car through HELL and was just as mechanically sound as it was the first day i got it. I filled up at least 2 times a week and was averaging about 10 mpg due to my driving and the only place i drove it to was my school. I was an idiot & can say lexus reliability could have costed me my life. the car never broke on me. Not once. the car saw redline serveral times a day. How is this possible?

Not sure I can believe all of that article -- there have been issues with Lexus engines etc. in some recent models -- according to an experienced Lexus tech I spoke with. The IS250 has timing chain issues (or related parts) and many of the ES300 or 330's engines had trouble with headgaskets or something critical. Also, while not all Lexus' fault entirely -- the LX450 (same as the '95-97 Land Cruiser basically) had a bad headgasket problem introduced with the 4.5L straight 6, which could strike at any moment in engines as new as 30k miles or never show up at all (of course the engine components are as tough as ever and last as long as any, well over 200-300k miles aside from the HG).

Now based on my recent experiences and learned knowledge, there's definitely no question that Lexus/Toyota has probably got most European luxury brands beat in overall reliability.

Guys, Guys, this article is for the LS solely from what I read.. I don't think they do this to every model. Maybe on the Gs they did most of this but I don't think every model goes thru the rigorous standards of the Flagship LS..
