90k service question

Default 90k service question

Just picked up a GS 400 with 110 K on it. I don't know if the 90k service was done yet so going to replace my timing belt. dealer 90k service only states to change the timing belt. was wondering if anyone had any problems because they didn't change the other components associated with timing. FYI I am a returning member under a new screen name (sleeper2jz).

Run the vin number online and see what work was done, timing belt isn't cheap at the dealer...

If you don't ask them to, they won't change the crank seal, cam seals or water pump. IMO this is pretty stupid. There's no reason not to change some very inexpensive, worn-out parts while you're in there.

Have them do these things along with the timing belt if you get it done at the dealer. Otherwise you'll be back in a year or two with oil leaks.

Sorry if this is self-evident, but does V-8 have the same cam seal issues 9and water pump?) as 6-cyl?

I'm a mechanic so don't believe in changing parts for no reason. Oem timing parts are made to last 2x there service life aka 90k timing service for a belt that is made to last 180k. For 90k service it only states the belt must be changed. I was just wondering if anyone has had a problem with just doing the belt.

Not worried about the dealer since I'll be installing the belt. If a seal were to leak somewhere down the line I'll take care of it as well.

Don't think so but my old car was a 2nd gen gs3 and my water pump did start to leak at 80k. This one seems fine on the v8.

I bought my 98 GS400 with 88k miles back in 2009 and did the timing belt service at 96k miles...replaced everything EXCEPT for the water pump. It still looked like new. 5 years and 80k+ miles later the original water pump is still going. I WILL change it at the next service in about 10k more miles. With that said, I'd go ahead and change it (along with everything else)now as age is a factor as well. But, I can at least attest to thd fact that the water pumps on the 4.0s are very long lived, among many other things.

Said the same thing about it's age and ended up finding a good deal on everything. Picked it up here http://lexus.sewellparts.com/accesso...1999/6884.html

also picked up a pair of oil control valve filters and oil filter so I could take care of it all at once.

It's a good feeling knowing you didn't waste your money on a water pump when you didn't need it ;-)

question, lexus website says to inspect differential and transmission fluids

do you guys recommend replacing them at 90k?
i got them replaced at 60k
