Default DRL US/rest of the world

I'm a bit confused about the differences of DRL's in US and the rest of the world or if there are any.

I myself have low beams, high beams, parking lights and fog lights.
When I turn the headlight switch to Auto-mode none of the above lights lit up unless it's dark outside (just figured this out recently).
Is this the case in the US too?

I have always used the manual switch to turn my headlights and parking lights on (the one just before the Auto-mode).

There have been some threads about DRL's and some have referred the high beams as DRL's and some have said the parking lights are the DRL's.

It's illegal here to drive without your headlights on so I guess in order to make any good use of the Auto-mode I'd have to install some stupid (they rarely are good/OEM looking) LED's in front of my car that are lit up during daytime.

If I decide to do that, where do I connect the LED DRL's to get them work and lit up with the Auto-mode on?

Mine is Canadian spec and the high beams are on at 50% power at the first 2 light settings.

With the headlights "on", the high beams turn off, and the small 194 bulb inside the high beam (inner headlights) comes on

That's a big difference when you have the high beams on (although 50%) when I have only the parking lights (194 bulbs) and low beams on after two clicks.
I didn't quite understand what you meant with that second sentence.

I have the settings like this:

with lights completely in the off position you should have "DRL's" on at all times..

What are the DRL's in that case, low beams? And it's made to work like that from the factory?

That's just what I meant with these differences. When my headlight switch is in 'OFF' position then my headlights truly are off.

When the lights are off the high beam bulbs come on at 50% power as the Drls, I believe some 98 US spec cars did not have drls. The 194 bulb comes on with the parking lights, first click, and the high beam bulb stays on at half power. When the headlights are turned on, the low beams come on and the high beam drl turns off, the 194 bulbs stay on.

I have a 98 400 and I don't have DRL's that are on when daytime driving.

So my conclusion is that US/CAN spec cars have DRL's and the rest of the world doesn't.

2000 gs300 USA

drl is always on (high beam at half power) at any click of the headlight stick
unless low beams are on, then the 194 inners take over.
