Make 2 vertical slats and mount them on the backside close to the outside so it won't be visible. Just a suggestion

^^^^This is what I thought you were gonna do. Idk if it's the angle on the pic, but the top slats do look like they need to be tilted down a little. But yes, it is coming along nicely.....

I agree. If you need vertical pieces to hold the horizontal ones, try to hide them along the sides. It will look much cleaner. Good luck. Project looks great so far.
