Default Howling Noise

So recently my car has been making a howling noise from the rear end, it occurs around 40-45 MPH and only happens when my foot is on the gas, once i take my foot off the noise stops. I change the diff fluid once a year, the transmission fluid is clean and is changed every 30k. The power steering fluid level is correct and the belts are all good. Based off the other threads i've seen these are things to look at. Last winter it would make a noise very similiar to this, but it went away. For the past 2 days, temperature has been anywhere from 15-0 degrees, but it was quiet yesterday and here today. When it was this cold earlier this month, it was also quiet. I don't believe it is the bearings because it only occurs when then gas is being pressed. I doubt (and really hope) it isn't the diff because of the relatively low miles (86k), fluid changes, and not abused, i mean tires do spin, but only because of normal driving in the winter. Differential failures seem like a rare occurance, I've only seen one or two on here and they were on a GS430. Does anyone have any input? I want to look into the driveline as well, but I really have no knowledge at all of what comprises it and what could be making the whirring/howling noise. I will get it looked at, but any ideas would be great, just to busy with school and work and unless I bring it to the dealer (which if i have to i will) I won't have a car to drive.

So based off that I have a worn gear set? Does that mean I need to replace my entire differential?

My GS also makes a high pitched whistling type sound, only in cold weather and only between like 30-40 mph, doesn't drive any differently when it does this so I thought it was air getting in somewhere

So the looked at it but they said it was low on fluid, but they couldn't see any leaks. Hopefully this makes the noise go away

Changed the fluid, is quiter but still there. Bringing it Monday to a transmission shop to have them thoroughly check it. I have one quote for $800 to install a used rear diff, is that a decent price?

If it doesn't affect driving I wouldn't spend that much money to fix it

I mean I'm assuming it'll only get worse, $800 seems like a small price to pay to have everything working correctly

Sounds like a good excuse to put in a LSD.

Haha a LSD would be wasted on me when someone else here could really use it. I went to a place and they listed off this long list of things t could be, but everything points to the diff. I'm getting it changed this weekend and hopefully it's nt the carrier bearing or something like that

After dropping it off, I guess my diff was going bad and the carrier bearing was on its way out as well, so for $1000 I have a new diff, new carrier bearing, and got the front pads and rotors changed. Expensive, but a transmission quoted me about $1300 for just the differential without the bearing and changing the front brakes

Picking up the car saturday, I'd assume it made the noise go away or at least I hope ha. I've been driving my es330 in the meantime.
