Default 5th gear RPMs....

I have an 02 GS300. Seems like my RPMs are close to 2800-3000 when doing highway cruising at 70-75 MPH in presumbably 5th gear. This seems high? Or this this norm from what others have experienced?

I notice with my 98 GS that it holds at those RPMS going that speed, but I believe it is in 4th gear when I am at those speeds, I literally have to go 100+ to get mine to shift to 5th. Just my experience, not sure if mine is a problem or normal as you think you are in 5th gear, I think I am 4th gear at that speed.

Hmm, interesting. Seems odd that it wouldn't shift into 5th gear until 100+? When I pop the shifter into manual mode, it shows it in 5th car so I'm assuming that 5th gear isn't very tall on the GS?

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Ok, cool. Thanks. Wish it had a 6th gear to get better MPGs on the highway, but oh well, still love the car.

Just over 3k is around 80mph for me. So it sounds like what you describe is normal.

Yeah I think it is very odd also, but it's just what I've noticed, I'll be taking my girlfriend to the airport tomorrow, so I can let you know if what I am experiencing is true. The car not switching to 5th gear until 100+ happens all time, my girlfriend even noticed, my rpm's hit about 5k before it actually shifts to 5th on the highway, I'll post my results tomorrow. But I don't have a manual mode so I can't tell as much, but I just listen for the shifts. I will say I noticed in my girlfriends 02 is300 that it doesn't shift under 2nd gear in manual mode, so maybe the car always stays above first gear so it is actually getting to 5th gear on the 4th shift and me thinking that it isn't in 5th is just the vvti kicking in? Literally my rpm's stay at 3k, I wot and it shoots up to 6k, the minute I let go of the gas, the car shifts back down, it's very peculiar. I don't know much about vvti and vtec but that's what I understand from what friends have told me.

Starting 2nd gear in manual mode is perfectly normal. However not switching to 5th until 100mph is an issue. I'd have that checked out by a mechanic.

Yes I agree that starting 2nd gear in manual mode is normal, I am stating that even my 98 GS probably starts in 2nd gear when I come to a stop (just how manual mode starts in 2nd gear), so maybe it is actually in 5th gear on that last shift and I am just crazy, lol. Do not mean to switch thinking here, but vvti is close to vtec right, so would that mean when I wot that it drops a gear to allow more tq and off you go? OR am I not reading that correctly?

My understanding of vvti it that is similar to vtec in the sense you are talking about. When you are in 4th gear at 100mph under you under full throttle or just cruising?

I am at wot, had to go pick up a friend yesterday, was about 45 mins away, and yes when I go wot and going past 100 mph it is going past 5-6k rpms and then shifts at 110 mph, rpms go down to 4k then continue up as I get faster (obviously). The minute I let go of the gas, it shifts back down to 4th, higher rpms. BUT it is not much of an issue since I will be doing my swap in a 3-6 months, gonna be sweet, so least of my worries atm.
