Default Fuel smell intermittently

What's up fellas 98 GS4
I'm having some issues with gas smell.
Sometimes when I turn on the car it will smell like gas...
And most times not.
But yesterday when I had a lady friend in the car it did it. Turned off the car, turned it back on and it stopped.
Pretty embarrassing to say the least...
No check engine lights or anything.

Checked under the hood and saw some fuel drops... Any idea what this could be?

Where did you see the fuel drops ?
Have you done any work under the hood ?

No work was done under the hood recently.

I'd have to take a photo of where I saw the leaks when I get a chance

Looks like valve cover gaskets are possibly leaking also...

It's a fuel smell. It's near the fuel rails

Took it to him and since it's not something that constantly is going on, he couldn't detect it.

Cars always decide to behave when they are near the mechanic.

But he says his hunch is that its the fuel regulator.
But he can't be certain until it actually gives the problem while in his presence .

Fuel pressure regulator is in the fuel tank.

Look at the drivers side frame rail, you should see 3 hoses coming up that connect to the engine. 1 hose is the fuel line, the other two are part of the evaporation emissions system and connect to the tank. I'd be checking whether the evap lines are in good shape. There's a solenoid under the engine cover that occasionally opens and lets the engine suck fumes out of the fuel tank. I might make sure the solenoid isn't broken and that there are no leaks on the lines.

it is my pleasure to solve this riddle for you if you havent already. fuel rail pulsation dampener. took the stealership a week to find it. luckily i had become very chummy with my tech after he smelled a sweet aroma coming from my car when i dropped it off a previous time. he tried to sell me both(theres two) for about 750. i told him i couldnt afford the repair at the time, he said i really only needed 1. buy both from sewell and have any decent mechanic replace them for you
