Thanks a lot guys. Jeff I will wait to hear your findings. That great Info by the way I needed that. I guess worst case I will have to swap the first clutch pack from the gs4, I believe that controls the first gear and reverse and swap the reverse solenoid from the 4 to the 3. Seeing that mine only had a problem with reverse. Jeff when you said swap the output flange are you referring to the casing on the output end or the entire shaft assembly. Also I see all tranny rebuild videos say remove the valve body before removing the guts, is this really mandatory or it doesn't matter the order?

What I called "first clutch pack" is really Jeff's "input shaft". It's the part right behind the pump. It just pulls out. Make sure you get the bearings right. There are flat Torrington bearings. on each end.

You don't need to remove the valve body if you're just replacing these two parts. When you get deeper in the transmission, it has to come off.

It's probably a good idea to pull and clean the pan before you start this. Otherwise all the crud that collects in the pan will contaminate the rest of the tranny of you turn it over or install it in a tranny disassembly jig.

I made my own dis-assembly jig from plate and tube steel.

Yea I think I will definitely remove and clean the pan area because its a used tranny and like you say I don't want crud to go back up in the tranny from the pan. so my plan is to drain the fluid, remove the pan remove the strainer clean all that out put it on a stand an let it drain for a while then turn it upright and remove the needed internals.

Can the first clutch pack be removed from the input shaft? I ask because if the first one controls the first gear and reverse and my old one has bad reverse I don't want to use that pack in the new tranny I much rather only take the shaft from the old one if possible. what do you think?

You really need to get a copy of the transmission repair manual. You can pay $15 for 2 days of access to TIS and get copies of all the PDF's. That's what I did. The level of advice you're asking for is pretty close to the limits of what you can do on a forum. I'm giving advice from memory and don't want to be wrong.
