2003 GS430 - Evaporator - $4k fix - WTF??
Hey guys, I'm dealing with a pristine, very well taken care of and serviced 68k miles 2003 GS430. My Lexus dealer just called me today and said it would cost me $4,000 to fix the entire evaporator case.
I've seen the DIY's on this here on this forum. However, I'm not mechanically inclined and don't have the time to spend in doing those...
What are my options? I'm a little freaked out here... I live in Florida so this is not good. Heat and humidity are traumatizing with out A/C

Are they replacing the evap case? or the core? or maybe both at that price. Either way, seems real high. To do a evap core on these it's about 6-7 hours labor (dash has to be removed to access) Last I looked into it, the core list for about $500. I'm not sure about the case. They may be quoting you to replace the entire system with lines, compressor, dryer, condenser, etc. In which case, that would get real $$$

Thanks GeorgeGS4. Is this a real pitfall with this car? I've never heard of anything like this. The PPI was exceptional and car was garage kept and babied it's whole life. I might need to find a private shop of some sort to handle this. I just didn't expect this to ever be an issue.
Have all GS owners expereienced this at some point? Or, is it a fluke and my bad luck?
Anyone have this happen to them and their resolution?
thanks!!

yep i think if you get the parts and shop around for a local mechanic it would be wayy less than half of 4k,,pshhh you can pick up a used gs for that price.

I would talk to the service writer and ask WTF.
Dash removal with a R&R of the evaporator and expansion valve should be no more than 10 hours.
What is their labor rate? I would guess about $125./hr.+
Still doesn't add up, I would move on to a independent shop that has done this type of work.
Good luck
