Default Steering column issue?

I'm not the one to usually ask questions like these but I'm stumped right now. Today on the way home I was backing out of a spot wheel turned all the way to the right something sounded like it poped . The steering wheel became hard to turn and it sounds like the wheel is scratching on the steering wheel shroud. If I pull on the wheel towards me I don't hear the noise and its easier to turn. I feel some play in and out but very little . Something let loose in the column area but what ? The telescope and up down motors work fine . It's not the power steering its def in the column . The car is a 00 gs400 230k miles
