Default Help me cure my rubbing in the rear of my 2001 GS430

Hi guys, I am running a 19x10 24mm with 265-35-19 in the rear of my 2001 GS430.

I'm on coilovers and the tire is right in line with the fender (i.e. it's pretty low but certainly not slammed like some of the cars here).

The fenders lips are shaved and the tire clears the lips just fine. In fact, I had three people sit in the trunk so I could be sure that it clears by a couple millimeters. No problem clearing the shaved fender lips.

Anyway, I notice when I hit large bumps on the freeway, I get a minor rub. I inspected the tires and I see that the rub mark is occurring on the very outer edge of the top of the tread. When I looked further, I notice that the rub contact is actually coming from just above the fender lip where the fender is double rolled. It's like the inside of the double roll sort of balloons out on the inside of the fender and this is what's contacting the tire.

For you guys that are slammed with aggressive offsets, how are you getting this to clear? Are you hammering/massaging/cutting that ballooned section that makes up the inside part of the "doubled" up metal?

Any insight/pics would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well, most of us super lowered guys run 245s so the tire is a lot smaller giving us the clearance.
Also when slamming the car a lot it naturally cambers in the wheels.
Maybe you might want to pull the fender out a little bit more, thats what i will be doing when running a 255/35/19 on a 19x11, on my next setup! Hopefully it will all work out good!

Interesting... So you just used a fender roller to roll that double sided "bulge" that's an inch or so above the fender lip eh?

I'll have to look into that since I'd rather keep the 265 and clear than to go down to 255 or 245 like most people seem to run with these wheels.

When I have a free moment, I'll have to remove the wheel and see how much clearancing I would potentially need to clear my current 265-35-19 (19x10 24mm)

Any pics of your tire set up? The more popular size is 265/30r19 but I want to run a 265/35 on my next set up.

puff, that's too short for my tastes in the rear. I am running a 245-35-19 front and I wanted my rears to be slightly taller. Here you go:

Ideally I'd like to have those 7-series BMW wheels widened to 19x11.5 and run a 295-30-19 in the rear.

Your tires are too big which is why your rubbing!

Most members run 245s even with style 95

Im assuming you have shaved the back?

Allow me explain in more detail.

My fenders are shaved and the tires clear the fender lips just fine (I put 3 people in the backseat and 2 were sitting on the trunk to tuck the tire and you can clearly see that the tires clear the shaved fenderlips just fine with room to spare.

The rubbing is occurring on the inside of the fender, about 1" above the fender lip. There is an area that is double rolled and the inside portion of the fender buldges out towards the inside of the car. On really big dips on the highway, the tire will kiss that double rolled buldge.

I think it's solvable and a 19x10 24mm 265-35-19 isn't typically considered overly aggressive by CL standards.

I was just looking for some feedback on how some guys have cured that problem as I know i'm not the first to be experiencing it.

I must say I'm surprised though, since I thought that once my fender lips were shaved and the tire had been confirmed to clear, there was no way that I would be rubbing on a part above the fender lip to the inside of the fender.

If "Advil4u" above can get his to clear, then I should have no problems, lol.

maybe lower a bit more to see how much more natural camber you can get? its either narrower tire, more camber, or play around with the fenders again.

btw I've had 10.5 +23 with 245, and 10.5 +29 with 255 and they fit fine with a shave and camber. LOL I had 285s before and they shredded like no tomorrow, but that was with no fender mods.

Dial in some more camber, shouldnt have to go in much more or get 255 tires.

As I mentioned above, when I had 6 people sitting in the back of the car (and trunk), I could get the tire to sit on that inner fender "bulge" so lowering more won't work without adding extra neg camber into it.

I wonder if anyone has a pic of their rear wheel well and I can point out where it is rubbing.

BayAreaLex - I am running 275/35/19 - BMW wheels on my old GS and I rolled on top of the lip to make it not rub (like said above). I had the same rubbing issues. Heck if you're near by and local (SJ) you can use my fender roller.

Just gotta love how many time you explain it to some. I like running bigger tires. I rather not worry about the tires coming off the bead running 255/30 or 255/35 stretch when I get a flat.

I'm not sure if you are following me here. I have no problem with the "lips." I clear those just fine.

It's the bulge on the inside fender about 1" above the fender lips that rubs on large dips on the highway.

Google "tubbing rear quarter panels". I think that's what you're describing.
