Thumbs up Why you should change your cabin air filter (pic after 108K miles)

I went with an eBay $9 shipped filter (see picture). This has to be the easiest maintenance item I have ever done on a vehicle. Seriously, it took me 3 minutes. No tools required. And obviously it needed to be done.

There are lots of posts and DIY's, but here's the basic idea:

1) Open glove compartment
2) Remove flimsy back access panel connected to glove compartment
3) Grab the two plastic post-looking things on the panel that you can now see
4) Gently pry it loose
5) Pull the cabin air filter/holder gently out towards you
6) Remove old air filter
6a) Consider vacuuming out the fan area; there was so much debris on my filter that some leaves/twigs/bugs fell down in there
7) Install new air filter into plastic housing
8) Reverse order for install

Look like you got your filter from that same lousy person I purchased mine from. I immediately sent it back to him. As you can see, the filter media is almost a .5 inch less, plus it wasn't well made (flimsy) so I was pissed when I saw that vs. the OEM filter. With something that critical, I didn't need less filter material. I got my money back and purchased a NAPA gold that looked exactly like the oem filter.

Good thing you changed it though. I'm **** about my car so that could never happen to me. I'm on schedule to change mine this May. I change it out every year.

I agree with you the fitment isn't great. I saw the difference and I was like, WTH? But when I pulled out the old I just compromised. I did make it a little better by pulling on the ends of the filter media to make it larger. But yes, next time I am either making one (as noted on the DIY pages) or I will buy a NAPA Gold one.

Hey since you sound about as **** as I do about cars, might I suggest the Car Minder App? I have 3 vehicles right now and doing everything myself makes keeping up with maintenance a pain. Also, the App tracks MPG, so I have detailed charts on all 3 vehicles (well not so much on the Lexus because I have only had two fill ups thus far). Anyway, just thought I would throw that in there. My cabin air filter is now one of the regular change items in the App.
