My lexus is reaching 170k pretty soon (owned 140k -/+ miles). The car is always been highway car. It will need lots of work done but it would be not done one time. I will catch up all these stuff slowly, starting important parts to least important.

I tried researching everything but some search came up vague for me to come up with solid answers.

1) I have to replace timing belt and related parts ASAP as they are still original. I am seeing that I have to get timing belt, water pump, pulleys, and tensioner? Do I need to replace Cam seal? Am i missing something here?

2) I recently replaced ball joints (practically were ready to go anytime). Thats only suspension work ever done to lexus. I need to replace the control arm bushings in front. What else should I need to replace? Everything else is original.

-I probably will buy bushings for control arms from Daizen Sport tuning. How much do they cost (they dont say on the website)?


3) What kind of fluids is recommended for transmission fluid change and differential? I am thinking Redline fluids for differential but for transmission, i'd like to get toyota fluids. Transmission shifts smooth even on original fluids.

-Redline fluids for differential
-Brake fluids (need to flush/bleed)
-Is red coolant from toyota right brand? I have to completely flush everything out to make sure there are no mixing.

I want to stay OEM, but it doesnt have to be if other parts are proven to be good.

with 170k it would be a good idea to replace seals
control arm bushing-castor bushing?
redline for differencial is good, as for transmission only oem toyota fluid, same for coolant only oem toyota fluid

Control arm bushing - castor bushing is what I need to replace. Ill order fluids from Toyota for transmission.

Spark plugs have been replaced. Do spark plug wires wear out? I have never had any misfiring problems. The motor always have been healthy and never gave me a code. Only codes i had was exhaust leak. thats the code only happened during my ownership since 2003.

I dont have any leaking/Valve gasket seems to be great shape. Only leaking I had was from defect oil filter.

You are on borrowed time with your seals. If you are going as far as replacing the timing belt, might as well replace some seals with 170k on them.

I guess nobody wants to explain why you would replace any seal or gasket that does not have any signs of leaking.....

Oh well, your money to burn I guess.

The point of replacing the seals is if you're going to have off all of those covers then you might as well replace the seals while you're in there. That's like doing your timing belt and not touching the water pump. If you're gonna rip the s*** apart then take care of it then and there and pay for the labor one time rather than twice.

My car had less than 170k miles and my rear main seal and crank seal was leaking. While Jeff Tsai was in there he asked if I would allow him to rebuild the VVTI gear and the seal because those tend to leak on our engines when they get high miles. Mine wasn't leaking, but while he was in there why not? Why wait 5-10k more miles then have my car down again and have him rip apart everything AGAIN? Dish out the extra 100 or 200 and just have it all done at once. Save you time and headache later on. Same thing with the cam seals, he was in there so I had him do them also.

Plus it's not like he has 20k miles on his engine, they WILL start leaking soon. No doubt about it, so might as well.
