How often should I change the 5W-30 synthetic oil if I drive 5K miles a year?
Hi,
How often should I have the 5W-30 synthetic oil changed in my 98 GS300 if I drive an average of 5K miles a year? The car currently has 108,460 miles on it and it has been 5694 miles since the last oil change.
Thanks!

You change it as often as it needs, not by mileage. If the oil is dark brown and no longer translucent, then it needs changing. Has to do with the condition of the engine and driving habits, you might be able to many more miles than the norm, just as well as you may have to change it more often than the recommended 3000k. My drag car can turn oil black just idling for a minute LoL, but thats for other reasons...I had a Civic with worn piston rings and I had to change the oil after like every 1000-1500 miles because it was burning.

Every other year as long as you heat it up. So if all your trips are real short, less than 5 miles then when you get gas get it at a far away place 8 to 10 miles of highway driving because if not condensation will eventually add water to your oil and getting it warm helps evaporate the condensation.

You should change your oil every 3 months if you're only doing 5,000 miles a year. Stop and go traffic and short distance driving is worse than highway driving. I believe Penzoil makes a type of oil strictly for vehicles that see a lot of stop and go traffic and short distance driving. I wouldn't go past 3 months on the same oil unless you're doing some highway driving.
