Default DIY: Re-chroming your OEM Lexus emblem on your steering

Hi, My chrome badge was chipping and was just looking ugly. I tried using the chrome paint you see at Walmart and Home Depot but that didn't work out too well.

1) The first thing I did was remove the badge from the 01+ airbag. I actually just cut it off, and I'm just going to re-glue it

2) Next you have to sand the emblem down, I don't remember the exact grit, but it was very fine.

3) I went to my local hardware store and but hi gloss BLACK spray paint, The chrome effect only works on black, and you want to get a the highest gloss finish.

4) I sprayed the emblem until it was a HI gloss finish and let it sit for a Day or two.

5) you need to order MGM chrome powder plating poweder, this is what makes the black turn to chrome. I ordered mine from ebay.
http://gundam-eclipse.net/topic/4864618/1/- for reference

6) I took a cotton swab and dipped it into the powder and started rubbing the emblem, and Bam a chemical reaction occurs and you get a chrome finish.

(Note it is not as good as a brand new OEM chrome finish, but I think it does the JOB its more of a black chrome but you really cant tell)

I will post the Final Results later tonight.

Its the only way on the 01+ Because I tried to take the airbag cover off, and couldn't. The back of the emblem has like 4 or 5 tabs, so when I pried it back, I just took a blade and cut the tabs.

Hmmm, I wonder if this method would come in handy for chroming other parts, such as the shifter bezel in 98-2000 GS, to get the 01+ look.

In for final pics.

Looks good. One thing I would like is a black chrome steering wheel emblem. Can't find one anywhere so I may have to do this on my own
