Default 01 GS430 From OEM Nav to Aftermarket Nav

OK so I've been trying to find some info without luck...

Step One - Purchase Non-Nav A/C controls (ebay - same year vehicle just in case) - CHECK (purchased in 2011 with the intent to change)

Step Two - Order the Toyota Japan double din kit (l-tuned parts). - CHECK - UPDATE 10/5/12 Received from Carson, super fast shipping.

UPDATED 10/4/12
Step Three - Order the aftermarket wiring harness - CHECK - FOR A 01+ GS with NAV, you need to order the Metra 70-8113

UPDATE 10/5/12
Step Four - Buy Headunit - CHECK - Picked up a Pioneer z110bt with the z130bt software upgrade

UPDATE 10/5/12
Step Four(b) - Buy more amps - CHECK - bought a few more alpine PDX amps (yes I said a few, not one, not a couple, a few). I already have two.

UPDATE 10/7/12
Step Five - Install

After finding out that that crutchfield harness wasnt going to work earlier today, i started to look for another harness that would work. Good thing i have great friends at Sound of Tristate out in the Philly PA area (Thanks Vimean!) to recommend a different harness. Off to Best Buy (since I am in NYC, not Philly), the only shop open on Sunday locally.

Next stop, metra 70-8113. The pin outs are perfect and was a direct fit.

The ones I need were:
Blue/Yellow stripe - constant
Gray - Acc
Lt Green - Illumination
White/Black stripe - ground

Since I am using an aftermarket amp, I de-pinned the RCAs that are on the metra harness.

IF you plan on using the stock amp, you will be plugging the RCA wires from the metra harness into the front and rear RCAs coming off of the headunit. This will provide the low voltage signal for the amp. The only thing you WILL lose is the subwoofer (i think).

Pics to come when it is wrapped up.

I'll be updating this thread as I go along with the process (over the next week)

Thanks,
Chris

Good thread... I've been considering doing the same thing in my '03 GS but want to make sure to maintain the "look" that's it's OEM. Curious to hear what others have done.

I believe if you order from Crutchfield for your Double Din they will include the wiring harness, then tis just a simple matter of installing..

It is currently for sale in the 2GS classifieds

Unfortunately this thread has already taken a step in the wrong direction with clutter. If you guys can help out, ill give a decent writeup on the install over the next week or two as parts come in and I work on it. As of now, I just need a part number or link for a wiring harness that will work on the GS. Thanks!

so Chris your stuck on step 3 right and not step 2? i did the exact same thing you did. i haven't installed my headunit yet but the audio place is installing the Pioneer AVIC and im assuming it comes with a universal wiring harness which i assume they will be splicing in. is there supposed to be a plug and play aftermarket wiring harness?

There's no aftermarket harness to plug into the nav equipped gs. You have to tap constant power, ignition, and ground from the oem harness. I have the colors but will have to look at my brothers car to get Them. And all the speakers wires will have to be new. Its a pita to try and tap the oem speaker wires. I looked at the wiring diagram for a nav equipped gs and the wires either split or change colors at some point.

Sak - yes, step 3, I was writing the steps but originally forgot I have had a non-nav climate control unit for a while (waiting for me to switch it up).

I care nothing about the speakers, that's what 3 pairs of 4v rca outs and aftermarket amps are for.

All I want is a harness so I can get the power/ground. I assume vss may need to be traced but I'm not too worried about that. But where I don't have to hack I don't want to. Simple as that. I will share my findings and make it easy. Why people have to keep secrets is beyond me.
