1998 GS400, Deal or No Deal?
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to see if anyone could give me feedback on the price of a certain car:
1998 GS400 - 2 Owner
170,000 Miles
Champagne Exterior
Tan Interior
Navigation
Everything Works
Overall Condition on the car as a whole is good.
Carfax comes up clean.
Price: 4800
Unfortunately I have not been following the price trends of the GS, so do you all think this is a good deal on the car or just a normal price I will see on GS400 nowadays?
Thanks for your time

I'm new to the forum myself but this sounds like a question I can help with. 2 weeks ago I bought a 99 GS300 with 104k for $3800 in MA. It's black on black and pretty much loaded with a GPS touchscreen too. While I really like the car, it looks like I may have bought a money pit. A mechanic I spoke to today said they're real nice cars but they suck if they need work. The specific problems of my car probably don't apply to yours so let me just say you should have a mechanic look at it and follow through to find out how much any repairs will cost. It's absolutely worth it to pay a little more for a car that has been maintained well and won't need any work.

I agree with Boston on this one, Either bring it to a Lexus Dealership or get a Indy Lexus Repair shop to check it out before purchase if you havent already. It shouldnt cost you that much to have peace of mind with your new rig , this way you can go into the purchase with your eyes wide open. Its possible after you buy it that you could end up spending thousands bringing back to running order...Now let me just say this, if the prospective Lex has been taken care of and its in good working order 170k is nothing on this car. Just my humble opinion.
Good Luck!

I appreciate all your responses. Thank you, I will have a mechanic look it over before purchase but it sounds like if I got it down at least another 300 dollar (4500) it should be a good deal.

$4800 sounds reasonable if it's in better than good shape, and needs little to no work (less than $1000). 170K miles is nothing to worry about with these cars, if taken care of. My 98 400 just passed 200k, and I just finished repairs that'll keep it trouble free for another 100k. There's a reason Consumer Reports gave the 2 GS it's highest rating.
