Random No Start, GS300, starter turns over FINE, engine sounds like no compression?
Recently, when I try and start my 2000, GS300, it turns over but sounds like the starter is just whizzing, then it finally starts and I hear a random clank from the top end?? Checked the starter and it is good. I can watch the engine spin freely, but it sounds like it has no compression. Then, it will start and sound beautiful. It's random and it mostly does this after sitting overnight. It is summer here in Tucson, so I don't think it is temp related. Starts just fine all day. I''ve checked the air cleaner and MAF, turned it over with a ratchet, just fine. Battery is 6 months old and is good, it'll crank it all day when it doesn't start. I haven't changed anything on this car in months, other than the oil a few weeks ago. Wondering if anyone had a problem with similar symptoms?
I realize internet trouble shooting is a long shot, but I'm looking for someone that has had THESE SYMPTOMS AND SOLVED IT!
I know it can be anything from the fuel pump/ filter/ debris in the tank, ECU etc. etc, so I'm not asking for a laundry list of things to check. I'm hoping to get lucky and find someone that had experienced this EXACT problem and conquered it! THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hi. I just experienced this same thing with my '02 GS300. It was later in the morning, but first start up of the day. Initially I though the starter wasn't engaging the flexplate but the engine was turning over, but with little or no resistance. Like as if the plugs were removed. Only thing I could think of is that the valves are not seating because of a fault in the VVT-i. After a bit manipulating the throttle, it started and hasn't replicated the problem. Have you or anyone come across any info on this?
