GS 300 or GS 400? Which one to buy?
Hi All,
I bought my wife a 99 RX300 that she loves, and now it's my turn! I want something that's comfortable that can still be fun to drive. I've landed on the Second Gen GS. The question is, which one to buy? I see there's the GS 300 and GS 400, V8 models and V6 models. I'm assuming the 2JZ is a more desirable engine to have, but my budget is limited to around $4k. Not too worried about miles, under 200k.
So the questions are,
1. Does the engine matter? V8 vs V6?
2. GS300 or GS400?
3. Anything common to look out for?
Thanks in advance!

So how is the reliability and performance with the V8 in the 400? I've only ever experienced V6 Toyota/Lexus engines. There's a 98 GS400 local to me with 99k miles on it.

The 400 is an amazing car trust me, it is very very reliable, just check the lbj and replace if needed, see if the timing belt was done if not, tell em to knock off a grand..... Other guys will chime in who have 400's..... Grab up the 400 trust me!.!. Great car and she is extremely fast..

400! Almost same gas mileage with 300. Coz my friend has a gs300, and mine was a 400. The big major difference i noticed was the power. And also the 400 pulls harder than the 300. Im not hating the 300, it's just from my personal experience. The bigger the engine, the better it is to drive for out of towns too.

IMHO, 2JZ if you are looking to do heavy mods , FI, turbo, etc. (which I think you are trying to stay away from)
Otherwise pick up the 400
I love my GS300 too, but its definitely slow. I'd be fine with it only it gets almost the same MPG as a 400
I just comfort myself saying the 2JZ has potential

Exactly, I like the thought of going mod crazy but honestly I just don't have the time or money to invest. Sounds like the 400 has the vote. Hopefully going to check the car out tomorrow!
