Default Temperature level only at 1/4 while driving, RPM's seem to be high at highway speed

I just purchased my friends GS300 Turbo and took it out on the road. It ride nice but not sure if it's normal or not. The temperature gauge reading seems to only go up to 1/4 above the "C". At highway speeds the RPM seems to be at 3000 at 62mph =100kmh. Is that fine or is it revving to high? I had a car with the same symptoms and changed the thermostat. After looked like it shifted back to overdrive at higher speeds. Please advise. Thanks for your time guys.

Just curious when you say turbo is it a NA-T or GTE swap?

stock temp gauges are unreliable. they can change drastically from the needle being at the normal operating temp range to 'hey im overheated and you are ****ed.' i suggest you get an aftermarket gauge, especially since youre turbo'd

Yes thermostat. They're designed to fail open. Meaning it'll operate at the temp you're discussing.

And the transmission will not shift to overdrive unless the coolant temp is at proper operating temperature. Hence your second problem.

So yes, you were on the right track.

Note the OP is in Toronto.

yeah the thermostat can be an issues with lexus vehicles in general ... good thing they are pretty cheap.
I hope that's the problem with the temp.

as for the rpm I'm not a specialist on the gte motors. but I know the 300's usually have higher rpms @ that speed. not to mention he probably.changed the diff. so that MIGHT be normal. don't quote me though.

Eh, I wouldn't hammer Lexus for it so much. I've changed countless #'s in GM's and Ford's and it's funny how readily available they all are at parts stores (ie; they all need replacing).

It could also be a temp sensor, not the one on radiator...the other one...

^^^^ What he said! Make sure you use OEM! Also check out the condition of your radiator cap.
