Weapon-R Secret SRI vs K&N CAI
I am looking to get an intake for my 1999 gs400. I am torn between a Weapon-R Secret SRI and a K&N CAI. I want to know which one you guys think is better. What are the pros and cons of a CAI and a SRI? Do any of you have any pics? Videos? Which one will give me better gas and more importantly more horsepower? I also have a custom 3" y-pipe and mufflers as well as a resonator delete so which intake will go best with that? If I get the SRI then I want to know if any of you have any DIYs for a custom heat shield. Thanks in advance.

Why do they show the stock intake (the blue line) start at 3300 rpm and why do they show the k&n (the red line) start at 3600 rpm? It's an embarrassment, that's why.
If you look at 3600 rpm the stock intake puts out 250 ftlb of torque and the k&n puts out about 160 ft lbs of torque
So you gained 8.2 ft lbs of torque at 5800rpm but you loose 90 ft lbs of torque at 3600 rpm (and who knows how much more below that since they mysteriously cut it off below 3600rpm) now get into your car and tell me when does you car shift gears under normal driving?
So you pissed away what? 250 300 dollars to loose 100 ft lbs of torque where you normally drive and your filter let's dirt into your engine to boot? (yes, research it, k&n filters fail at their primary function, that is to filter dirt out of the air) You did all this so your car sounds good, and if you brake torque your car to 4000 rpm at launch you gain a miserable 9hp. Real smart, but hey it looks and sound good don't it?

I forgot to mention that you are also sucking hotter air', yeah yeah I know, your little shield shields out the hot air, but ask yourself what is better, getting the air from in front of the radiator, like the stock air intake does, or behind the radiator, like your "shielded" k&n does? I bet when they did those curves they had nice cold air piped to the k&n filter to skew the readings even further. Oh well, there goes that 9hp gain at 5800 rpm

sam, dude, Im glad you took the time to compose that whole essay but what your saying does not make sense. I can understand where you are coming from. It is an easy mistake to make, unless I am completely retarded(please tell me if I am, the name of the game is to get the best performance).
Hopefully you can follow me through my explanation, read it carefully and make sure you full understand it. let me know if you have any questions. I dont think you know how to properly read a dyno graph and how a dyno is operated.
Yes, There is slight power loss in the low rpm band....its not by much only by a few at the most 10. Think about your statement and think about the principal of torque and the physics behind it. How is it possible for an engine to loose 90lbs of tq? That thing would move soooo slow you would feel the difference, it wouldn't even move!!!!! Think of the difference when you throw a turbo on and gain that amount of tq....its nuts you feel that in ur kneck. NOW take that feeling of gain and apply it to if you lost 90lbs of tq ( its all relative, you learn that in physics class...you did take physics right?). there is no way that there is 0 tq from 1-3400 rpm (most likely they started the dyno read late in the rpm range.( I am contacting to K&N to confirm)
OK back to reading the graph. The red line is the K&N and blue is stock. If you look at the graph you will notice that the K&N has a positive gain over stock box 3700rpm-6600rpm......Actually look at the graph, this is not an opinion it is a fact. Another fact is look at the air temp (that is the outside temp not the engine bay temp...it is a fact that the hotter the air temp is the less power it will create (colder air is denser and allow for a better explosion)
With that being said I have a bluetooth dongle hooked up to my car with torque pro to monitor my vitals. yes it was slitty hotter but only by about 4-10 degrees over my stock box readings.
Ok Im done now I hope you understand this now...

All I am doing is looking at the k&n chart this time I used a ruler. At about 3650 rpm there is a loss of 40 ft lb of torque between the stock and the k&n just run a vertical line at 3650 rpm it touches the k&n at about 200ft lbs and it touches the stock at about 240 ft lbs. Ask anyone who has one of these and if they are honest they will tell you that they loose bottom end. You will not feel the loss that much because as soon as you floor it the transmission shifts down and you are above the rpm at which you lost your torque. But under normal driving conditions you are going to have to put more gas to get the same speed hence you will loose gas mileage. I clearly stated that in a drag race the k&n will give you an advantage and maybe in the race track but using this on a street car makes no sense. You also must admit that the way Lexus stock intake gets it's air (from in front of the radiator) is a better solution. The added intake noise is a placebo effect that makes you think you have more power. Also the fact that they are terrible filters should be enough to convince you not to use them. I live in the southwest and I use to use a kn on my 4runner till I looked at the intake after the filter. In that moment I took the kn out and threw it in the garbage where it belongs.

I clearly said at rpms below 3700 you loose torque and you loose a lot of it (maybe not as much as I originally stated since I eyeballed it but 40ft lbs is still a lot.
So as I stated before, if you are going to drag race or race and you do not care about the longevity of your engine then by all means buy one but it makes no sense for a daily driver.
