I did this today some observations

1. If your iPod is on it will play through the speakers no matter what you have on ( fm, am, tape, cd) so if you want you can put it on fm and find a blank station

2. It may be me but it seems the base in my whole system is stronger for some reason hope it won't hurt something

3. If you use the cd option all you need is one blank track and set on repeat track so you can burn one blank (silent) track and not loose the other tracks on that cd to silence

4. You have to put your iPod on near maximum volume to equal the volume of a cd

5. When you are not playing your iPod you need to unplug it or you will hear interference in speakers (even if iPod is on pause)

Ok here is what I did. I took one of the cassettes that you attach your iPod to so you can play it on the casset player and took it apart. Removed the head that the wires are attached to. Then carefully put it back together (make sure all the gears and the rubber wheel are in place because if not the tape will auto eject) . The reason for removing the head is so you won't hear the hiss when you put the tape in the player. Now pop the tape into your deck and leave it in there. Put Dolby C on (this will not affect the sound of your input because that is going straight to the amp) it will get rid of the rest of the noise inherent in the tape player. Now whenever you want to hear your iPod just push the tape button. No need for a blank cd or relay or switch. Later if you want to hear a tape you eject your modded tape and pop whatever tape you want then you put the modded tape back in for the iPod or auxiliary. If you dare you can relabel your "tape" button "aux" I will just leave my modded tape in there all the time

I think I figured out why there seems to be more bass. When you plug in the iPod the speaker volume goes down. I'm guessing that the subwofer volume does not go down therefore accentuating the bass

EXCELLENT write-up. Worth being a sticky for awhile.

Has anyone else succeeded in this project? I'd like to see the creativbility that you have in terms of routing the wires and mounting the aux input. Did anyone dare to drill a hole in the dash?

I ran it to the arm rest (the lower storage compartment that has the power outlet) just had to drill one hole. The next thing I am going to do is add a blue tooth adapter so my iPod can connect wirelessly to it

hey Lude. check the fuse for the dome lights located in the passenger side footwell; its a 10 amp fuse. when i just did this mod to my 98 GS400 with Nak, it blew the fuse too, and my radio wouldn't turn on. i quadruple checked all my wiring, and I can't figure out why it won't work. something is amiss; i just removed it completely and replaced the fuse and radio works now.
