Modify steering ecu DIY
#32
Its in the footwell on the drivers side. You will have to remove the plastic piece right beneath the steering column then it will be right next to your parking brake or in that general area. Look on page 2 I believe, there are pictures. And BTW, I did this "mod" last night and im diggin the heavier "sportier" steering feel!

I know I'm digging up an old thread here but was there any movement on this as I have a spare ECU and would like to see if I can modify it. Sadly the images are all crossed out for me, would be nice to see if there was a DIY for it.
Thanks

well alright then this is how I did this mod. I did this around 2 or 3 years ago but I never took any pics, so these pics represent 5/6th of the work. Somewhere in my house may lurk the original resistor I pulled from the circuit board, if I can find it I'll snap a pic and post its value. IF I can find it... anyway, I removed the resistor and put a volume pot in its place. The pot was mounted on the bottom of the under-panel where the foot well light is.

So I was able to access it in the opening behind the parking brake release. In the second pic of the previous post, I had a flashlight underneath and could see the 10mm bolt holding the bracket in place. you cant see crap in this pic but this is where to poke the ratchet through, and i needed two extensions I think... Sorry but I got to go for now, but I'll finish up tonight, more pics too of the ecu itself and what i did in there.

As for the ecu itself, I had to cut into it in order gain access to the circuit board. It didn't just slide out like the pdf made it look, mine was glued in place it seemed. So I de-solderd the resistor and put in a pair thin gauge wires to connect it to a 10k pot, then installed the pot on the bottom of the underpanel. So yes the pot controls the steering effort and you can even adjust it on the fly, though it takes a few seconds for it to register the change.

I haven't had any issues with any aspect of the steering, I like mine kinda heavy, but you just have to experiment with it a bit. and BTW on the under-panel there are two phillips head screws, two tabs, one visible, one not. and a slide tab of some sort on the back to keep the rear of the panel in place

This is a great little modification. I've had the interior apart a lot as I've just swapped dashboards over! I take it this mod can be done to any of the PS modules? I have a spare from my '99 300, I'm going to have a look today and see what I can do with it.
Thanks again for your help.
