At that time, it was the fastest and quickest in its class! You can do search the GS400 won alot of awards from every magazine including Motor Trends Car of the Year. I was considering a BMW 540i or a CLK430 at that time as I shopped the the two cars against the GS400. And GS is quicker and more powerful then the MB and BMW counter parts. I owned V8 camaros and corvettes at the time and the GS would whoop up on them too. GS400's are not the joke you like to think.. Alot of people like to talk crap about the GS but don't even know the History.. The GS can still take on most cars on the road today with more HP than it has even for 15 year old car.

The GS400/430 run about 14.3-14.5 @ 95-96mph in the quarter from the rag articles I've seen.
That's not bad for a 3800lbs sedan and it was pretty impressive for 8-15yrs ago. But it's not the end all be all of V8 sports sedans.
Someone mentioned the CLK430 and 540i of that era. All three cars were very close in terms of 0-60 and 1/4 mile with what I believe is a very slight edge to the Lexus. At least those cars don't have balljoint problems, lol j/k

When I owned an 01' GS430 a few years back, I felt the punch and acceleration. My current silver GS430 is an 05' and has a kick to it but does not feel anywhere close the 2001 model. I thought I needed to do a full tune up, etc (it had 71k miles on it). My 2001 still feels faster lol

I can't believe you guys are talking about "professional drivers" for 14-15 second automatic cars. Mash the gas and don't turn the wheel. It's not rocket science at those times

I've been here 11 years and it was fastest until 2006 when the IS 350 came around...then the GS 450h became fastest...then IS F and now LFA....
Back in fall 1997 to about 2003/4 it was a fast car, faster than 90% of the cars out there...today Camry's do 0-60 in under 6 seconds

According to my "exhibition of power" ticket today, yes the GS4 can spin the wheels even with VSC still on, turn it off and you better be good at counter steering and throttle. 214k and still going strong, even with all my exhaust leaks and most likely fried O2 sensors,
threw the car a bit too sideways today and a cop saw, atleast he didn't get me for anything else.
