If the shop that does the estimating for the insurance estimates damages to be more than the value of the car, then the car will most likely be totaled.

Do you have a clean title or salvaged? If it's salvaged then you lose 25% on the value of the car(probably varies depending on which insurance you have or by state).

corner hits like that will tweak the frame many times deeming it a total loss.

What exactly does a total loss mean? Is the insurance company gonna pay me?

Depends, do you have comprehensive coverage? (basically is your car covered even when it's your fault) And if the adjuster declares it a total loss then they will pay off your loan and you will get the remaining amount (if there is any) minus your deductible of course.

total loss = totaled= non repairable (or at least not worth repairing it to the insurance company)

Totalling a car by the insurance co is a gain to them, doesn't have much to do with repairable or not. Just cold hard numbers that are fluffed by the repair shop and by the insurance company so you don't see the real numbers they actually pay.

Take it to a shop and ask them what it would cost to repair if YOU were paying the bill and if you got a front clip for them to put on and paint. Ask the body shop if you go them a full clip if that is enough parts to repair.

Go to car-part.com and find a front clip, then call the boneyard and see what the cost is for a 3/4 clip or a full clip.

Also, if insurance co does total, buy it back from them. I got my 96 suburban back for $500 and drove it a long while after and sold as is for $1300, but probably could have got $2500 if I tried. I made the mistake of trying to sell in a hurry and pricing it that way, don't do it, you will find every moron out there trying to pay you even less for it. It will just frustrate you.

So choices:
Buy back and fix
Buy back and part out
Buy back and sell
