so 1998 gs400 160k $6k. buy it? the only thing im worried if when i sell the car, it would be hard due to the history of it. some people dont care, some looking for a good track record. put your self when buying a car (or even your previous/current car). with a history like that, would you buy it?
6000.00 is about right for this car without seeing it. call a lexus dealership and see what kind of service records they have on it based on the vin. Also you need to know how long you have before a timing belt service is due. If the owner did the service when they were supposed to, it is going to need a timing belt in 30,000 miles. If the body is in great condition and interior is all good, except for the center armrest of course, then yeah, it looks good.

if you are that worried about it send a couple of grand more for something like this:

Owned both! IS first then gs300 now I have GS430.....I definatelly like gs much better then IS. IS is small, pretty much same gas milleage. I wouldn't go back to IS unless it was boosted

Derfinately go V8 route if you can... you will never look back! GS400 or GS430!!!!

i always think as the IS as the race/performance car and the GS as the luxury riding style car.

I too have owned both. I had an is first but it was 5 speed. I hated the transmission on it, but that was the only thing I didn't like. I miss my is. Now I have a 98 gs300, I gotta tell you the brakes suck. So I got ls400 bbk. The suspension is really soft(good for running errands and long trips)so I got coilovers, the front end on the gs is old so they require some updating(bushings, ball joints, tie rods etc). The seats are big and don't hug you very well but then again its luxury vs. Sport. I don't mind the automatic but boy do I miss my 5speed. I've found that after owning both you do always look around at the opposite platform and say "man I wish I had an is/gs." It looks like more ppl like the gs though, I'm more for the is.

That's a great car... 90k miles on it and it just had the 90k service done. SOLID. I would toss a bid out there and see where it takes you and your IS.
