metal shavings. luckily that was the track car so i could afford to have it down for some time. i always run magnets on the filters as well. granted it wasnt a ton of shavings to cause anything catastrophic. but it was still too much. rebuilt that damn motor twice and used the same royal purple crap. metal shavings. third rebuild and went back to mobil1 (the only other oil i'd use) and no problems. after the break in i went to amsoil. these were the only 2 builds that i've ever had go bad.

Usually just go to the dealer and for $40 they use a toyota filter, some type of synthetic oil, and wash it. Today I figured id do it myself since I just hit 100k, so I used a mobile 1 filter and valvoline max life. I was so used to doing 3000 OCI because I had an es300 that was notorious for sludging (even though at 240k, when the valve covers were pulled it was spotless), but I might start doing 5-7.5k OCI with the GS.

Why not have an oil analysis done instead of going on opinions? For example:

I love oil talk, because I find it to be ridiculous. Right now I use Mobil 1 because it's 22 bucks a jug at Walmart. If it's not on sale I might go with Castro, or valvoline, or Quaker state...whatever is on sale. Napa synthetic is essentially valvoline. To me it doesn't matter as long as you change it. I change mine every five thousand miles and honestly I could probably safely go to 8k, but why risk it? My point is as long as you change it regularly any of these brands will be fine...probably more than fine.

Besides my ls 460 I have a honda accord that I bought new 15 years ago, it has 300k miles. I changed the oil every three thousand - usually with Walmart oil - but I didn't care what I put into it, as long as it got changed every three thousand. I've put anything - and everything - I could get my hands on into it. I've mixed brands on an oil change, I've mixed weights...I even put a couple of quarts of diesel oil into during an oil change (because I ran out of 5w30). I've used synthetic, I've blended synthetic, I've used heavier weights, lighter weights,....sometimes all of them together. And I have not had one single engine problem with that car, not one. And I never cared one single ounce about the brand of oil filter...I've used fram, ac delco, puralator, napa, motorcraft, wix...come to think of it the only thing I've never used was a genuine honda filter. No problems.

I think the mechanical design of the engine is the key, along with consistent routine maintenance. If you have a poorly engineered engine...guess what? You are screwed. Doesn't really matter how often, or what brand you put in there...you are going to have problems and it's not your fault. With the honda engine, they were built very very well. I know people that never change the oil in those things and they still run - I mean pull the dipstick out and there's nothing on it - and they still go and go and go. If I did that on my 4.6 ls engine, I'd by putting a new $11000 engine in it within a year...or less.

It's the engineering and routine/consistent maintenance.

I stick to mobil 1 and their filter.

The local dealer here uses Conoco 0w20 synthetic and I'm sure some sort of Toyota filter (whatever that is).
