Hi,

A few weeks back my fuel pump went out and had to tow the car home. I have roadside assistance through GEICO and I requested a flat-bed. However, when the tow truck came the driver simply lifted the rear wheels and towed the car on its front wheels for about 2 miles to my apartment. Afterwards, when I turn the steering wheel I hear a squeegee kind of noise around the steering wheel column. I filed a complaint with GEICO that I was not happy with the service.

My question is, is it possible that I am headed for more problems soon? If I take the car in for inspection at a local shop, can they find anything I can link to this..? Any thoughts appreciated.

GEICO said they will open a case on this.

I don't think towing by the front wheels would hurt as long as the steering wheel was securely locked.
Towing by the rear wheels isn't recommended as it is a rwd.

Were you there when the tow truck come? did you tell them that your car is a RWD? it won't hurt if you do the shift-lock release (put in N) and towed on front wheels. But if you still put it in P and they just towed it like that, I would say you make a complain n get it checked at nearest dealership.

i prefer to lift the front rather the rear... reason why is that when the truck turn... it might make teh gs steering wheel turn which can cause lock it.its possible. when that happen... it will mess up the tires and maybe other suspension parts.. when lifted the front... the car have to be in Neutral so the rear is drive freely...but still prefer a flat bed... also hope ur car is not lowered if towing like that....

Have a mechanic look at it first to see if the towing actually caused the damage or if it was a problem prior to the towing.

99.9% of the time, you don't have to tell the driver. A tow truck driver who is doing his job right looks under the car to determine if it is FWD, RWD, or AWD. And the position of the trasmission would have no effect on the front wheels, they are independent from each other and the drive train.

As for the new sound, I highly doubt it started because of the car being towed. And that squeak around the steering column, my car has done that for ages, and there is nothing wrong, it's just slightly annoying.

I've had ALOT of flat tires, so I've been towed alot of times. It's been towed with the front tires and no problem here.

I disagree I think towing can cause damage to a car, I had some serious alignment problem on my car after getting it towed for being parked in a spot too long

Towing on the front wheels shouldn't hurt. I towed a Porsche Backwards on a tow dolly from Arizona to Florida with no problems.

He did request a flatbed, but when it came, they towed it and didn't put it on the flat bed according to his post.
