Default Need Help, i'm lost!!!!

to start I have a 2000 GS300, 150k.

A few months back had problems with my starter(click click start problem), read some posts and come to the conclusion i needed to either change the contacts on the starter or change the starter entirely. So I purchased a new starter with the intentions of replacing the whole unit.

Heres the problem, the other day I went to start my car and after the car started it sounded like the car was continuosly trying to start itself!!!!!! I tried to turn the car off but the car kept trying to start itself. I again turned the car on (all while the car is still trying to turn over) and I took a chance for a 5minute drive home and made it to infront of my house and just as i did the a big cloud of smoke came out from the hood (which when i opened the hood, it seemed as if it was coming from under the plastic engine cover) and smelled like burnt rubber. I immediately disconnected the battery. The next day i took the plastic engine cover off and nothing looked burnt or smelled like rubber(at least on the top of the engine). I hooked the battery back up and nothing weird happened.....went to start the car and it would not even click. All the electrical functions work (lights, alarm, display,etc)..........when i turn the key I hear a bunch of relays, clicking as if its trying to set up for the start but nothing happens.

what the hell do I do????? what could it be?

Replace the starter. Mine did the same (click, click, then start)and then did the turning over on it's own thing. Replaced starter and it's been fine.

So you had a bad starter. Bought a new replacement unit, but didnt change it.
you tried starting your car and it kept cranking after the initial crank and turn over then you decided to drive it like this correct? if this is the case you should have heard a loud constant grinding noise. Say good bye to your Flywheel and starter. If by some miraculous chance your stater is the only problem, change it ASAP, but i doubt there hasnt been any damage to the flywheel.

BTW.. next time disconnect the battery and DONT DRIVE if there is something wrong. Starter solenoids get stuck in closed positions, very rarely in open/crank position which in your case sounds like it did.

I know I made the classic mistake of just not disconnecting the battery and having it towed. Good news is, I just came back from the mechanics and it took literally 40mins to install the new starter with no issues, car started right up. No damage!!! thanks again guys for the quick responces
