Default DIY: Battery Relocation Project & Oil catch tank fabrication

So, I'm preparing my car for the 2010 race season. I'm getting a bit more serious this time around. I removed my system from the car. It weighs in at around 240lbs. Then I'm putting the battery(around 50lbs) in the trunk to help improve weight distribution. I will be fabricating a custom battery box and oil catch tank today as well.

I'll update this thread with pictures as I go.

Start by ripping everything out. You can see that the battery is already in the trunk, I just need to fabricate a battery box.

I bet 250lbs is gonna make a big difference. What kind of adapter is that are you using to connect the two +wires together? Are you doing this on your SD or your white one?

Should be interesting to see another 1/4 mile run with some kind of slicks.

haha.. dude, saturday you were telling me you were "thinking" about ditching the system and doing the battery relocation. Not 48 hours later and your half-way through it... love it. Can't wait to see it.

Can't you reuse the existing battery holder?...save some time, but might not look as good.

13 lbs? seriously? I would upgrade to save weight...this gs overburdens the suspension.

well its a race battery ha ha, only give you like 12 amps for 30 minuets, just enough to get you down the track a few times However, optima makes a 24lb battery that has CCA 450 amps MCA 575 amps, but not sure what the GS needs and if thats enough.

Finished my battery relocation and wire tuck project.
I had to rebuild the wiring harness on the passenger side of the car to it to fit inside the fender. It looks a lot cleaner now in that whole area though.

Here are some pix.

Running the wiring harness through a new loom and went through the side access hole. Put a layer of insulation on the metal to prevent the wires from getting cut over time. You can see the mess of stock wire loom on the ground next to the tire. All the extending was complete.

Wires tucked up against the car and zip tied. Everything secured and ready to go.

Shot from the engine bay. Cleaned up, no more wire harness on the left side.

No more battery here. It's in the back now.

Step 1 of fabricating battery box. Cut up correct lengths of aluminum plate.

3 pieces of 3/8" thick aluminum plate.

Welded them together.

Setting up a 90' degree clamping. Welding the sides of the box.

I think I did an OK job of welding aluminum for being a few moths out of practice lol.

Battery in trunk now. I still need to find a plastic top cover and then drill two holes on the side. Then run some grommets and then have the power and ground cables go through there.

Close up of box.

Proof that I actually do my own welding. Me welding on some endtanks onto an intercooler in this pic

What my friends and I do on our spare time. SC300 with 1JZ-GTE had a water pump blow up. I think there was no coolant, just straight up water in the system so everything rusted out like all hell. I'm the one on the right
