I am 16 and looking at what car to buy. I have found a 2000 GS300 for a decent price. My one concern is drivability in the winter. Since I live in northern NJ, the roads can get pretty slippery and I am unsure of the safety of having a rear wheel drive car in the snow. And is the IS300 also comparable to the GS300 in the snow? Thanks for any help!
go with front wheel drive. You're probably too inexperienced to drive in snow, yet alone with rear wheel drive. just my opinion. I'd get a beater at your age before a nice ride...

I'd agree with both points. I'm sure it's party jealousy, as when I was 16 years old I could barely afford a 1000$ beater, let alone an 8 year old Lexus... But yeah, get a beater for your first car, it's going to get beat up those first couple of years, and dings/crashes hurt a lot less when it's not a 10,000$ car.

Man, may first car was a brand new Eclipse and that was a huge mistake! To a certain extent, you just dont know how to take care of it I got lucky a couple of years later when I traded it in and got it paid off in the condition it was in... As a first car you just really dont know how to care about what happens to it. Yea, there are those who are born with the ability to take care of it, but only they know who they are, but for the most part you see kids just running the car down 'for fun', hell even a lot of adults still do it
I just got my GS300 and I'm fairly worried about the upcoming winter. I'm a little older than you though and have had fair amount of experience. But I'll tell you what, my first car was this older RWD V8 T-Bird. Holy crap that thing sucked in the winter here. Eventually got in a wreck when relatively SAFELY driving it. It just slid and slid and BOOM! Listen to people FWD and AWD till you have lots of experience and/or money. Someone said Subi, that'd be cool for your age 2.5RS. GL.

ive driven it in the ice on summer tires and while you had to go slow as hell the main difference between that and my friends RWD tahoe with winter tires was that i could tell when the GS was about to slip and if for some reason it did it was really managable whereas in the tahoe all of a sudden u where sliding and there was nothing that you could do about it

The car is terrible without snow tires, a decent set of snow tires will help you get around without getting stuck. I driven the GS daily for the past three years through some brutal winters.
i'd have to agree with everyone on here. I'm 20 and living up in state college, pa we saw a fair amount of snow and from my experience last year, the gs can be be a handful to drive in snow if you don't have a good set of snow tires. listen to the guys on here and start with a subi or a fwd car. and most importantly respect mother nature when driving in any inclement weather. she'll bite you in the ass real quick without any hesitation.
