Default Checking oil level for 2GS

Hello guys, I am just curious after changing the enigne oil. Do you guys check during the engine turn off, or while the engine is running and in D mode? Also, how many qt. did you normally put on yours GS? I check the forum for any previous post for checking the engine oil level, but with no luck. I put on around 7qts. When I check the oil level while the engine is running, it's right at the full level mark on the dipstick. If I check while the engine is off, the oil level is way pass the full mark on the oil dipstick. I looked up in the manual, it saids that 5.5qt with oil filter, but it's too low when I checked it an engine was running. So which is one is the correct way? Any comments are welcome. Thanks guys.

Listen.. If it's a V8. It takes about 5.5 quartz w/ the filter. After drain and refill. Start the car up for a few seconds. Turn it off and check. Don't overfill, it will cause oil burn, which will run down to the cats and would cause them to suffer and running hotter.

Start the car for more then a few seconds. Get everything to operating temperature as the manual says.
The filter and all the channels fills up in a few sec so checking the volume is accurate after that point. But the real purpose of the full temperature startup is for you to look under the car for a puddle of oil indicating you have a problem...

ivnnln man I realy hope you didn't put the car in drive then walked to the front to check the oil

That sounds pretty dangerous man.

as for the amount yes 5.5 is shy my 2000 v8 gs400 takes exactly 6QT.

No, problem man...this probably enlightened others as well to be honest. As far as I know the ONLY fluid (level) you check while the car is running is your transmission fluid; it should be on point and bright pink/red.

I did not check the oil level with the shift gear in D and that can be very unsafe. I normally have the Oil Stop did my oil changed, but I decide to do it myself since it was not that diff. to do. Thanks everyone. You're guys have been a great helped.
