Cold Shift
This may be a dumb question , but why does this "hard" shift, from 1st gear to 2nd gear, only happen when the car is cold.

No idea about the "hard shift", but thought I'd update the thread with my own story of "0763".
Car had code when I bought it.
Did about 2000 miles, then changed transmission fluid (full drain through cooler pipe).
ECT light still flashing, but ignored it for another 1000 miles.
Did a 6 hour round trip (400 miles), including MrsEgg hitting the kerb at 50mph last week.
Noticed a couple of days later, no ECT light flash, and much improved response + power.
So looks like the full flush cleared the fault on it's own - eventually!
I will be doing another full flush in the early new year when I do the next service, just to make sure.
I know it's probably not needed, but it's still cheaper than a new solenoid!

Never went in to find out what code was triggering the Check Engine Light. Just noticed that my GS would take longer than normal to shift when the car is cold (only the first time thru the gears and only from 1st to 2nd gear). Car shifts fine after that first shift in the morning. The light goes off after a few start cycles. I just did a drain and fill this past weekend (3 quarts came out thru drain plug). I plan on repeating the process again this weekend. The car has 170K miles on it and as far as I can tell from the service records, the trans has never been flushed.

Thanks to Bombsquad and all other contributors to this thread. The pics and info gave me the confidence to copy and sort out my tranny. Thank you.
I cut through the sump gasket seal using some strong cheese wire at the two rearward corners. This was enough to loosen that end and the sump then came away.
My ATF was black and not good. I had the standard fluid change in 2007 at my Lexus dealer but didn't appreciate that was just a fifth of what was in the system.
Upon removing the pan, the magnets were very gritty and the whole pan needed a good clean. I also removed the offending solenoid and cleaned it in electrical contact cleaner.
Two more changes once the pan was replaced and the car is as new again.
Happy days and, once again, thanks from England for all the advice.

My p0763 came back, this time I'm going to replace the part instead of just cleaning it. Glad to see this thread come back to life with members fixing their cars.
