Guys, i have an 02 GS430 with 79,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago, my steering wheel became off center and the steering has been kinda loose and the car has been all over the road. I just had an alignment done at Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis a maybe like 5 months ago. Anyway, i took my car in to them this past week for an alignment and also for them to diagnose a creaking noise coming from my front driver side. They called me back saying that both of my front left and right lower balljoints were bad and it would be no point of doing the alignment if i didn't get that done. It would be about $700. I asked them "how can that be possible, when i just got one of my balljoints replaced less than a year ago?" I said, no thank you, i'll take it to my mechanic for years who's worked on Toyotas and Lexus cars. My car is at his shop today and he called me back saying that my ball joints looked fine and they were tight. He did say that i had a loose bad front wheel bearing that needs to be replaced.

Have you guys ever had a dealer lie to you? Should i get the wheel bearing replaced and take his word that my ball joints are fine?

Thanks!!

Sounds more like a misdiagnosis than a outright lie. And yes I have dealers (not Lexus) make mistakes and tell me to replace the wrong items. Either way always go with the mechanic you trust. If you have never had any issues with him in the past and have been happy with his work then he deserves your business.

Also remember that even though parts may be only one year old other failures can cause them to breakdown prematurely due to the added stress. Fortunately it sounds like this is not the case this time.

I concur w/ DEBONAIR. Dealers also try to pull that S@#t when it comes to late model cars hoping the owner is none the wiser. Good thing you have a mech you can go to and trust... Stick w/ your mech.
