Exclamation 1999 GS400 Crash Test [Video Included]

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZNPE-Kp4ug0

This was just uploaded on youtube. Scary.

Lexus GS
1999-2005 models mfg. after Nov. 1998
FRONTAL OFFSET TEST

OVERALL EVALUATION: Good
Structure/safety cage Injury measures Restraints/dummy kinematics
Head/neck Chest Leg/foot, left Leg/foot, right
Good Good Good Acceptable Good Good

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
Test details:

The Lexus GS was redesigned for the 1998 model year. All 1999 and later GS models manufactured after November 1998 include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of a GS 400 with the structural changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the left knee indicate that injuries to the knee would be possible. Head acceleration from roof rail hit was low.

That's crazy
But it seems pretty safe inside..compared to what happened to the front of the car..

I've heard our GSs hold up very well to these things..

I don't like "Crash tests." They use low end vehicles that were put together to demonstrate for financial purposes for distribution. The videos don't present, nor prove anything regarding crashing.

If I get hit, I get hit! Every car in this world has its' flaw. Even a 1 Million dollar car!

Check out their crash test videos. They're just about the same.

The car is supposed to absorb the hit. So the severity of the damage does not indicate a failure on the GS' part.

To the contrary, they purposely put crumple zones so the metal would crumble, instead of intrude into the passenger compartment.

However, anything after the A pillar, is bad damage IMO.

so... if post 98 have structural changes, does it mean 98's are doomed?

that looks great for a car nearing 10 years of age...

the passenger cabin is largely undisturbed.

crumple zones =

Too bad they didn't show/do the more modern SUV sized T-bone hit or the off center head on collision.
