Default 02 GS300 Ashtry-less modification

Seemed to me that the ashtray took up a lot of room. Not being a smoker, I took it out and modified the space so we could store sunglasses, misc stuff. What do you think?

Great idea, just a suggestion, try to find a large enough amount of your material to make a one piece covering. Good Luck

It's a good idea, but what happens when whatever you put there rolls behind your dash when you hit the brakes? Think it still needs some work.

I noticed a lot of hot air coming through when I drove without an ashtray for a while. It was pretty uncomfortable. That is a pretty good idea if you can cover it up completely.

Yea, I remember the hot air too.

OP: all you need is some pvc plastic cut it to size, use a little heat to bend it and get the right shape and find a way to attach it to the back of the ash tray; maybe epoxy.

I'm not sure if this isn't some kind of sacrilege. If there's one thing Japanese people like to do, it's smoke. Just kidding! I think this is a cool idea, if you could find a local fabricator to make up something oem looking maybe with carbon fiber. Also, on l-tunedparts.com there is a replacement for the garage door opener button unit to hold sungalsses. If you don't have a garage like me, that could also be done.

me too....its a interesting idea specially since the gen 3 HAS a oem compartment mod for this but IMHO this looks tacky and unfinished. just buy a cheap spare and fab it up to work for you

I like it, and with any mod, it takes time to progress to the final product. I think with a little creativity with the above mentioned, it would be a pretty nice to have a little storage there.

This is a great idea, but it does need a bit of work to make it look OEM. As it stands, it looks unfinished. Play with it a bit and see what you come up with.

Who cares, now instead of having a flush factory piece you have a whole. Am I missing something? If you don't like the ashtray, just don't open it up. Completely worthless if you ask me

Hey, hey, hey . . . . . I know, I know . . . . looks kinda like poop in the picture when the flash hits on it, not as bad in real life. But it works. With the whole unit out, it would have taken a lot more to fabricate a filler. With just the tray section out it keeps things from going into and under the dash. This was done in less that 1 hour just prior to a road trip. The ashtray is useless and the way it angles at the bottom, ink pens get in there and it's hard to get to them.

The way it is now, all I have to do is re-insert the tray section and it's back to OEM. I admit the black non-skid stuff looks bad (not as bad in real life, but the flash really shows it), however it keeps things from rolling around.

I will try to improve it . . . .one day . . . .one day.

Oh, I have looked for a junk yard ashtray to modify, but haven't been able to find one.
