Default Should I go with 2GS in snow?

I'm gonna be going to Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada for school later. The conditions there are about 2/3 of the year snow, from what I've heard. I'm in Vancouver right now, and planning to sell my car and get a 2GS4, but now I don't know if I should take my car over or what not.

My current car is a 97 eclipse turbo awd, it works in snow in vancouver, but that's light snow, less than a ft, but with 4 seasons only. I shall be able to drive easily there with 4 season tires for the eclipse since my brother have a 06 330xi with 4 seasons.

What should I do? I've also been looking at the GS350 AWD, but that'll stress the budget... it's not that my parents doesn't support me to change to a better car than the eclipse, but I don't want my parents to use that much money for me just because I wanted it....

Have you considered Honda or Acura with front wheel drive? WRX?

There's a button you push in the 2nd Gen GSes...... It says, yup, you guessed it...... "Snow". Not the best car for snow driving, but it does the job. Just don't push the car past it's limits, or maybe even your own in the snow.

An Acura TL would be a much better car for the snow though.

Yeah a good set of snow tires will definitely make a difference. I deal with lake effect snow here in Cleveland and I don't have any issues with getting stuck or getting around with my Blizzaks on.

Get a Lexus and throw some snow tires on it. I like 2G DSM's but not for an everday car unless it is close to stock.

Thank you for all the comments and recommendations guys. I'll definetly look into the threads.

I've checked out Acuras, especially the TSX, it's very good in many ways, especially very well equipped in a low price, but I had a Honda before and somehow it just doesn't really float my boat also the styling is not great imo. TL is just better inside and worst outside to me...

Then the Subarus, my friend have the WRX, I helped him mod it... roof scoop, exhaust, sidemarkers, clearing lights etc... but when I was cutting through the body of the WRX, it's even thinner than my friend's Civic! (I've also done sidemarker install on the Civic.)

I liked Legacy before too, but interior feels too cheap with not much to love since in Canada, there's no Spec B or anythign at all, so plain.

Don't like G35s too, I like the M35/45 though, just too expensive... :P

BTW, my 2G DSM Looks stock (as a 99 Eclipse with high wing) except it's lowered, a hard to see exhaust, FMIC. But not much mods, just K&N + Injen intake, B16G, fuel pump, AFPR, Power Slots, Hawk HPS, Alpine deck, speakers, amp, sub... then there's some small stuff and a lot of fixed stuff..... which is very costly....

Well, I'm a fellow DSMer as well. I have a 98 GSX...pretty heavily modified...everything done (performance wise)...with the exception of a stock block, which I hope to remedy during this winter

Seems like a popular combo...I know of a few CL members who have had/or have DSMs.

a 2GS @ stock height with good snow tires on might be ok
but it would be best to have AWD to handle the harsh winters in winnipeg

i think it is best to get an old subaru or some FWD beater to get thru the winters there because of the salt on the road and so on

but RWDs with 4 seasons will definitely not survive the winters in winnipeg
it is so different than vancouver

I'm in B.C., yeah...

Yeah, that's the point of the thread, I have a AWD Talon which I CAN bring it over and use, but of course I'll have to raise it back up. ;P But I think I may need to change cars since the car, well, it's a DSM, it'll break down anytime...

If I'm taking the GS, I'll be with snow tires and maybe LSD, as I've heard it helps...

I even plan on getting snows for the AWD if I'm there, but my brother drove there fine with 330xi with OEM A/S... I think I'll need to ask him quite a few quetions... He told me before, he works for chinese food delivery, and he's using the company's Smart to deliver, only once he have to use his 330xi.

Why not just get a 330xi like your brother? It is much more of a drivers than the GS out of the box, and you have the bonus of awd for the nast snow storms that B.C is known for.

from experiences with driving in snow id saw its not a good idea to have a gs in the snow. i have a 2gs which is modified although even in seattle when we got snow i wasnt even able to get it out of my parking lot. the next day there was a little less snow and some compacted snow and i put chains on and still didnt fare too well.. i had an integra previously and have noticed that fwd cars normally fare better in the snow than rears. good luck on your decision however.. your best bet would be a older wrx or something like that.
