Default LSD for GS options

I've noticed that most people go with the 3.76 LSD from a automatic Supra or did a custom job (purchased a LSD and added it to existing differential). Has anyone considered going with a 3.13 out of a manual supra? 3.26 vs a 3.13 would be small step in the wrong direction, but it you would gain LSD.

The one difference between the 2 Supra Differentials is helical vs worm gears. Any advantages or disadvantages between the two(excluding gear ratios)?

If one were to go that route can it be ordered new? Where could you find one on the used market?

For the purpose of this tread, let's not get into a discussion about why I would want the 3.76 over the 3.26 and 3.13. I know the advantages, but I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to getting a LSD in my GS sooner than later. I can't stand the open differential.

WHY?
Could someone please explain to me what changes when you change the differential in the GS? What is an open differential? :|

An open differential means that in most situations only one wheel will spin. So if I turn a right hand corner and stop on the throttle, the right tire will spin wildly and TSC will kick in (if its on). An LSD in the same situation would put power to the ground through both tires and thus reduce the amount of tire spin.

Is that the only reason why people get the Supra LSD 3:76? because of more traction?

That is only part of the reason. The other part is the changing from 3.26 to 3.76. When you add to the ratio in this instance you are increasing rpms. This means that instead of ~2600 rpms at 75 mph the car will be at ~3100 rpms at 75 mph. Please note both are estimates, if someone wants to post accurate rpms, please do so.

Since you are moving rpms upward you are getting more power out of the engine at lower speeds. For instance, on my Ford Super Coupe, changing from 3.27 to 3.77 took about .5 seconds off my 1/4 time. Also please note that this will only change your 1/4 time and shouldn't change your 1/4 speed. If it does, it could lower the speed, as in the case of my SC (about a .5 mph. The only way to increase your mph is with an increase in horsepower.

The 3.76 will definitely make your GS feel a lot more powerful off the line and will decrease your MPG. I haven't seen any time slips from before and after a change from 3.26 to 3.76.

Michael to be honest with you, I dont really know enough about the supra auto rear to comment intelligently.

If I were going to look at doing what you suggest I would consider the following.

Will it fit, sometimes the supra stuff isnt a direct swap, there could be differences between the auto and manual diffs. Are the flanges all the same design will you need different length axles or drive shaft, are the mounting holes in the proper locations

Also what is the cost of the auto pumpkin compared to the manual pumpkin compared to a TRD unit?

If it were only 2 or 300 dollars it is a no brainer go ahead and do the manual or TRD unit.

If I were going to look for a new one I would contact carson toyota, if I were looking for a used unit I would contact Aliga, or look over at supraforums, maybe even post up looking for one.

HOpe this helps some
